1999 TL navigation hard disk question

I bought a used 99 TL with navi. The owner said the navigation doesn't work and said the hard disk is probably bad. I found places on ebay that sells hard disk for around $75.

Now is all the data in the hard disk from 1999? Does acura have updated hard disk they sell? I live in woodbury MN and it's a fast developing suburb. I mean in 1999 there were basically nothing here but now it's full of shopping centers and new homes built everywhere. Do you guys think I should just buy a hard disk or convert to DVD so I can upgrade to the updated 2.50 disk?

The map data files for the hard drive based system were only updated to, I believe, 2002.

Another option is to build you own Compact Flash based replacement for the original mechanical hard drive. Search the forum for "PCMCIA" for additional information on this. but you would still be limited to the dated map files.

And you can just install one of the DVD-based units but be prepared to spend several hundred dollars for that. And the latest 2.50 disc would be an additional expense. But in a fast growing area, that might very well be the best solution so you can get the latest map data.
