12HP gain for CAI on RSX-S Possible????

My friend has a RSX-S...and he's all talking to me about the INJEN intake. He showed me DYNOS showing me 12hp gain from the intake...the only other mod the car has is exhast. The exhast gain is about 10, and the intake is about 12...giving these two mods a total gain of 22hp. Is this possible? i'm arguing with him that it's not, and that there is something wrong....but he insist that it's true.... any insights?

The intake gain is possible...they're usually an 8-15hp gain, though normally more toward the 8 than the 15. The exhaust I seriously doubt...unless he put on a straight pipe exhaust, and in that case he lost some major torque. Exhausts usually give 2-3hp max.

Remember thats only for our cars. I read somewhere that exhausts on American muscle cars could do alot more. My friend has a mustang cobra V8 and the exhaust he wants would add somewhere around 20 horses.

I do not believe that HP expectation is reasonable.

In addition, you cannot simply add HP figure quotes from aftermarket parts to get a total HP gain. Most manufactures test their mod/upgrades one-at-a-time on a stock vehicle to observe any net gain. If one component adds 10 HP and another independent part adds 12 HP, realistically together they will probably not realize more than a 14-15 HP total gain (and even that is optimistic). Unless the parts are specifically engineered and optimized for each other, such a gain is a *paper* gain only. Otherwise, in theory you could install ten of those aftermarket exhausts inline of each other for a net gain of 100 HP. And we all know that's not the case.
