so i was headed out to the country after work and decided to pass an old man in a BMW X3 before it went down to one lane, so i sped-up, little did i know there was our notorious motorcycle sitting there. so he clocked me at 44 in a 35 and told me 10 is the magic number and let me go..whew..

There's no such thing as a cushion or magic number. That might be HIS cushion/magic number. The speed limit is the speed limit. Some cops enforce it by the book while some cops let you get away with some excess, like the cop that pulled you over.

haha dude yes. That just confirmed my theory. Whenever I drive I always drive 5 or 10 over cuz I just can't help it. But I always go one under just because. Like 55 zone I'll go 59 or 64. I love to hear that lol.

I heard 9 as well because once you hit 10 you get points on your license.

Here in NC, it basically goes like this, if you're going more than 10 over, but less than 20, you'll get a ticket but it'll get reduced in court. But, if you're going less than 10 over, the judges here will laugh at the officer for pulling you over.
