03 tl type S @ 70k miles busted tranny, motor mounts, and rear seal
well my tranny went out at 70k and i get a call from the dealer saying that since your tranny is out we found that your 3 engine mounts were shot to shit...and your rear seal between the tranny and engine is leaking....i told them how the hell does your engine mounts go bad in a car that is only 3 years old they said that its common and wears down quick on fwd cars....i think this is total bogus but it was only 450 bucks to get to replace since the tranny was already out so i had to say yes to fix it...but does anyone have any pointers?
thanks

Yes - it is common with these mounts (unfortunately). When my second tranny went at less than 40k miles they replaced my rear mount under warranty as well.
I also had a rear main blow out with less than 40k. That was fixed under warranty as well.
Should your mounts be covered under warranty? No - they are part of the bumper to bumper warranty.

I have an 03 Type-S and two of my motor mounts went out late last year. Keep in mind that there are factors involved in the wear and tear of your car, for example: How hard do you drive your car? Do you drive your car a lot (excessive miles)? In your case you have 70K on a 3 year old car, where as the average mileage should ideally be somewhere around 37K - 50K. At 70K you have already surpassed the allowable mileage under the warranty, so I don't think it would be covered.

My Service Manager said " in theory it may" the internal vibration from the transmission failing is put into the mounts which then fail. My car had been leaking a mystery fluid on the driveway recently- the hydraulic? fluid inside the mount.
Car now in dealer for trans, front mount for $140, thats 3/10 hour labor plus part. I think that is reasonable since they are providing $5000 worth of transmission and I am driving one of their cars for a week. It would have cost that much just to rent a car anywhere!
And of course, how hard you drive effects ALL the components of your car. Put it on ramps sometime and go through every nut and bolt and check them, you will be surprised.
On the race car, we do this check of everything that can be reached, before each weekends racing AND a minor check between sessions. Stuff comes loose, parts wear out, thats life.

And I have broken motor mounts and transmission mounts on my street rides with smallblock V8s.
Its actually pretty easy to do, and since we all have somewhere over 200 HP, many pushing 300HP? (my guess) from an engine sitting sideways to the line of force -just a little bit of physics trying to be defied there!
Abuse is abuse, you cannot blame Acura for building a car you thrash.
Enjoy the car, just be prepared to pay the piper occassionaly

he did say " in theory" as if it were his best guess as to why they fail, without admitting to a cheap design flaw (thus opening the gates to a discussion of why am I paying for this repair).
I am surprised at the number of people who believe that the factory OEM parts are the best thing made. Nope, they are simply what they get the best deal on.
Lets hope you design something we can all use!

I thought the mounts were covered in the warranty ?
And people say it depends on how hard you drive the car, but everyone has diffrent opinions on what driving hard means, so can someone elaborate what they mean by driving hard ?

If you think Acura has problems, then you don't want to go VW/Audi. What nightmares.
But I also agree that the amount of problems with the TLs are unacceptable. Honda built these cars to a price point and not to a quality point.

What does driving hard mean?
Well, if you are being pushed back into the seat leaving every stoplight, drive with your knee and hip instead of your ankle and toes, are being thrust into the seat belt as you brake- you are probably driving the car a bit too hard for someone who isn't ready to put out $$$ for repairs.

I hate reading about these problems. It makes me worry. My 03 TL-S has 29k with NO problems or issues at all. Original tranny with oil jet kit.
I'm very happy my warranty is good until June 2010 or 100k. I really hope I don't experience these problems either way. I'm gonna get rid of the car when the warranty is up. In 2010 I'll be able to afford the 07 TL-S lol

mine was just like that too until my road trip down from norcal to socal, showed no signs of going out until 30 mins before getting home. I had the dealer on the phone as i was still able to drive trying to call for an apointment, and when he was talking to me about the symptoms of a failing tranny, i was at a unprotected left turn and then my exact words to him was......
"oh shit im rolling backwards down hill now.....im pretty sure its my tranny now.....see you in a few hours when AAA comes"

Like I said, from what Acura told me engine mounts are under warranty (7/100), so I dont know why you wont just have Acura replace yours for free.

I had a transmission replaced a couple years ago and they didn't repair the engine mounts; just told me that I needed one. I'm getting ready to replace the second transmission, too. The 1st one went at 93K, the second @ 144K. This sucks.

Hey 03typeS
Did Acura dealer tell you the mounts were 7/100 or was that actually from Acura Customer Care?
Did they actually REPLACE mounts for you free and at what mileage?
The word has always been mounts covered under 4/50 or whatever the original bumper to bumper warranty was, since gen2ers are past that- we just pray for our transmissions to live long and prosper

I have the Acura certified booklet, which shows me what is covered under the warranty and what is not, the motor mounts are under the 7/100 warranty just like the trans, there are other parts that are covered in this warranty I dont remember them.
My car has about 47k miles.
