03' TL-S or 00' GS400

Guys...

Really need some good advice...

I traded in my 00'TLP for an Honda Pilot... Since then, I have really missed the performace of my TL... Now, I am ready to get a second car (boat goes to the wife). I have driven Honda/Acura all my life (integra , accord, TL). So I am in the mood for something different...

I found an Blue 00' GS400 w/Nav with 51K miles for $29K. I test drove it and boy can it move... The nav is not as nice as an 00' TL Nav. But anything with an map will keep my ass from getting lost.

I am scare.

My other choice is to lease an 03' TL-s / Nav for about $440 month + tax.

I need a car soon and can't wait for the 04' TL.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Allen

Not really comparing apples and oranges.

1. Different classes of car; and
2. NEW car with warranty vs. USED car with ?used car warranty from dealer?

well TL Type-S is great and everythin but the performance & luxury can't compare with GS400, my vote is for Lexus on this one

The price is about the same... THat 's why I am comparing the two. The GS has 51K miles on it and its on longer under warranty except for the powertrain.

If I really want the GS, then I might haggle it down to 27K ... But I am scare that the thing will end up costing me a lot in the long run due to repairs.

I haven't been able to sleep for 2 days...

I was so stupid to trade in my 00' TL 9 months ago for a Honda Pilot (didn't need a 2nd car then). I really miss my old TL.

For that price I would pick up a NEW TLS with navi, plus some extra goodies... Or wait for the 2K4 TL to come out.

Is the Lex certified? Make sure you are getting new tires/brakes/belts/hoses and stuff like that.

If you aren't going to rack on the miles then 51k probably isn't that much for a car of that quality. As long as its mechanically sound now you can probably get to 100k easily.

As much as I like the GS... you are running a risk with repair costs and what not.... Think tires, brakes, timing belt, and any electrical problem that might occur. Can cost you more than you think...

For $27k if it'll come with new rubber and such, I'd go for the Lexus.

BTW...you havent told us if its from a Lexus dealer, or on the lot at the local Acura dealer....

That lease prices seems high. Right now they are giving TL's away.
Just got mine in California for under $300... It is not a TLS but there still should not be a $200 difference...

Thought this would help...

i love my tl, but i'd rather be flossing hard with a blue GS400. Plus the power is right there.

$300 bucks a month?? Is that with nothing down and does that include tax?

I plug in some numbers in Acura.com and a monthly payment of $300 would mean that you are getting an 03 TL /no nav for $25,500 on an 36 month / 12K miles lease... which is $1K below invoice... WOW...

The rubber on that GS400 has about 20% of its life left. It is not an Lexus Certified car. It is from an used car dealer in NYC...

I test drove the 03' TL-S today and I really couldn't feel any power difference from the 0-40 mph range when comparing to my 00' TLP.

Any more comments guys... I really appreciate the help!!! Only wished that I never traded in my 00' TLP for that BOAT! Even more glad I didn't get an MDX (nicer Boat!!!)

Actually... Its really not in the same price range... The 03 TL-S / Nav will cost me$30,500 and the GS400 will cost me $27K (will not pay 29K).

Its going to cost me $800 for a nice set of tires on the GS400.

The TL does have decent power when comparing to the GS400. But that V8 is pretty sweet... I was constantly peeling rubber when I test drove it...

AHHHH.... Another sleepless night coming...

I gave them under $2,500 down and the payment is just under $300. It is the TL w/o navi. Too good of a deal to pass up.

Be cautious of the maintenance cost on the Lexus!

Tough decision though....

How about an 01' GS300 w/Nav for $27K? Now would that be an easier decision?

No, that wouldnt make it easier, unless the 01 has like 10k miles on it. I'd rather go for the GS400. The BIG thing you mentioned before is that the Lexus is being sold from a used car dealer. I would steer clear of any used car dealer that is not part of a new car showroom. First of all, all the used car dealers buy the cars at the wholesale market. Who knows what was the reason the car ended up there. If it was a trade in at a new car dealer, i cant imagine any reason it wouldnt have stayed on the used car lot. It doesnt have that many miles for its age (often a reason a new car dealer will wholesale off a trade in - when the trade in has high miles). Now it seems more like you ought to go buy the TL. Get the new car with a warranty. Otherwise, get a certified Lexus from the dealer, or do a private sale. I never trust used cars from a used car dealer. To shifty for me... My 2 cents.

2002acuraTL,

You are absolutely correct. I started my search for an Lexus certified GS300 and ended up looking at the non-certified GS400 from an secondary dealer...

I will be getting an 03' TLS wNav. How many of you out there like the bright BLUE ones???

I am hoping that I can get one with a spoiler for $31000.

Thanks,
Allen

GS400 is a nice car but when i saw the quality of it . . i think its poorly made compare to our tl . . well not poorly made but its comparable to our tl but its double priced our tls brand new . . .
my cuzin bought a gs430 for close to 60gz . . . he tryin to sell it and he lost a lot of money
i had a cuzin just purchased a 00 lexus gs400 w/nav about 6 months ago and he got it for 25g.
its a nice luxurious car but its would be a hard deicision if i was in your shoes too . . .

ACURA is running an special lease and finance deal (2.9%) on the TLs until 6/30. Do you guys think I take advantage now or will there be an better deal the closer we get to the new TL?

Anyone else in the market for an New TL right now?

When you are not sure which car to get - always check how much an insurance will cost you. When my cousin got 540i instead of his 2.2CL, his premium made him go

I bought my car two weeks ago, a black 2003 TL-S and there is no better time to buy. The weather has sucked and sales have been down so Lexus, Mercedes, and most other companies are offering 2.9%. Thats what I got on my TLS. Waiting is cool and all but the 2004 TLS looks weak, more like a accord. Go with the GS you'll only regret not getting it later, although you can get the TLS and have money for tint, wheels, and whatever else you want

DrivebyTLS-03,

Do you mind letting me know how much you paid? Which TL did you get?

Did you lease or buy?

Thanks,
Allen

certified dealership is the same as getting coffee from starbucks just the image man nothing else they dont do anything extra that a regular dealership cant do cause basically they buy warranties from lexus itself and sell it to you and the mickey mouse dealership finance dept can do the same .On the same note it costs the dealership only $200 just to certify it but they charge you an arm and a leg for it How do i know this well i worked in car sales for a while and i since i purchased my 99 last week i saw the same cars without Navi in my acura dealers for $6k More !! haha

Allen here is my sincere opinion instead . Lexus no doubt is the flagship of luxury but since it has 50k miles it has seen its better days already now with Acura dont buy a new one either buy one thats has like 5k or 10k miles on it already something that still has the new car smell in it you will save the 20% driving off the lot depreciation and your car would be under complete factory warranty just in case something happens and furthermore you can get it certified for few hundred or make it part of the deal and get an extended warranty all for less then the lexus . Good luck with your purchase and decision.
