Thumbs down 02 TLS Tranny death

My father's 02 TLS tranny died two weeks ago with 19000 miles. I have an 01 TL with 19000 miles. I got the letter from Acura which he did not, and two days after I showed him the letter his tranny died. So the next day I traded my TL in for an 03 I35 which I picked up yesterday. Very nice car. I know it seems like a rash decision but I owned and was totally in love with my TL and was worried about the resale value when the time came to get the new 04 TL. I was torn between these two cars two and a half years ago when I bought the TL so that made it a little easier. My dad's car is leased and is fixed now so I hope he makes it to the end with no more problems. I was given $20000 for the trade which I thought was fair since I payed $27500 back then. I kept the car perfect as most of you do and I had many mods such as Piaa fogs with 02 switch,spoiler,6cd,mud guards, and tint so it was VERY hard to do but I made a business decision and got tint,spoiler,mud,6cd,fogs on the I35 and was able to keep my payment the same as I was paying for my TL so it worked out great. The I35 seems really nice but each car seems to have some nice things that the other does not. All in all they seem comparable. I loved my TL but I had to do it since it hit so close to home. Take care and I will check in now and then. Sorry for the long post. Good Luck to all!!

Good luck with the Infinity. Keep us posted on how you like it. It seems Nissan is a pretty damn reliable brand. Too bad about your TL, I know EXACTLY how you feel.......

Thanks guys. The I35 seems to be reliable and so far I love it. It is a similar size and weight to the TL and drives very nice. The 255 is quick and the car is quiet and smooth. I just drove past the Infiniti dealer and saw my TL in the lot and almost cried. I still cannot believe I did it. I will post some differences and pros and cons soon.

My dad's car is leased and he has a little more than one year left. He has had an Acura since 87(this is his 3rd) and probably will get another. My two brothers also have Acuras so that was why I got mine.

Wait until the 2004 TL comes out...I think the tranny problem(s) are fixed by then.

Congrats on the I35 .. I have it's second cousin, the Max. I love the low-end power, but the four-speed auto doesn't do it justice .. I wish it had my TL-S's 5-spd w/ the aggressive 1-3 gearing. I honestly think that would make the I35/Maxima a much more performance oriented car (in the auto format, i'm not talkin' bout the 6-spd). I also wish they offered the 6-spd on the I35, they used to offer it in the 5-spd back in '91 or '92 .. I can't remember which year.

Best of luck w/ the Infiniti .. it's one of the nicest looking cars on the road.

I did not realize that Infiniti had a poor resale value, but I do not plan to sell it soon anyway. The tranny problem was the main reason to sell. I guess it was a combination of several reasons - including the build quality issues that we have all complained about. I hope Acura fixes these issues/problems in the 04TL. I still think the TL is one of the best overall cars/values out there and I would still like to go back to it someday if the situation is right. But with the trade and the price of the I35 I ended up with no out of pocket money and lowered my payment by $2 a month. I could not pass that up.
