Is a 02 TL Type S w/ 178k worth $5K?

A friend is selling his. He replaced the tranny 40k ago. I test drove it and feels great all around. A couple of cons are the navigation system is sun faded and peeling on the inside, and the car doesn't always lock/unlock (its not the key fob). My wife thinks it's a bad deal, but I really like this car. What do you guys think.

i would spend 7k and get one with 100k or less on it. i have seen so many TLs in mint condition going for only 7000 around here, they are a bargain.

depends on how well it was taken care of. My tl has about 182k right now and drives/feels much better than most cars i've driven. A lot of people dont believe my car is a 99 with that many miles. If you trust your friend, ide say go for it

If tranny was replaced 40K miles ago by Acura, its very good. I'd rather take car with 170K miles and newer tranny than the one that has 100K miles and old tranny.

Thanks guys. I'm leaning towards getting it. I'll give it a week to see if any better deals come along at around 5k. Do you guts know how difficult it is to replace the navi? I would like to go with an aftermarket model with Bluetooth.

damn jjashaa i just bought my 03 TL base with navi 124k miles for $5800 in April 10'. Clean and no problems, tranny changed in 08. Just a long scratch along passenger side and few rear bumper dings (but I live in the city so that is normal and it has gotten a low worse since I had it). I thought I got a good deal but I guess not eh?

tranny is pretty much the only thing you need to worry about in this car, all other stuff is minor and can easily be fixed. Engines are supper durable, and with proper care (syn oil) will last forever. after being on this forum for almost 10 years, I have yet to see anyone here who had an engine failure (aside from those that had timing belt break or running nitrous and other crazy mods)

I didn't even bother to check the market value but now that I've checked it, I guess its a decent deal but not great. A good condition with that many miles cost $5,400 and fair condition cost $4,400 so it depends on how much you like it.

Are you sure you are looking at the right cars? A 95 civic with that many miles is only worth around 1.5k on kbb

KBB's prices are skewed. When someone is selling an overpriced hunk, and claims,
"Kelly says it is worth xxxxx", I always respond, "Darn, I want the car,
but I guess Jelly is going to out-bid me". Or, "Let Kelly buy it, then".

Ok, I bought the vehicle on Friday! As mentioned earlier it drives great. It really needs some cosmetic work however. A new paint job and a new tinting job. Also the navigation system is sun damaged, I posted a new thread regarding that. I must say that I am disappointed that already the rear driver side window motor seems to have broken (the window slid down on its own and won't come up) and both side mirrors stopped moving down when I put the car in reverse. Could that be a fuse are did both motors burn out? The driver side stopped working yesterday and today the pass side. I'd appreciate any advice.

depending on year: only 1 outside mirror moves down in reverse- must use selector switch...ck owner book
may only be pass side that does it (Im 01, we dont have that feature)
The intent is to see the curb while parking

window may be a broken regualtor assembly--have been a few recently
see junkyard/auto recycling yard for a used one

we warned you about buying from `friends` or neighbors!!
cheap used cars are that way for a reason,,
it has problems they know.. and you have to find out

best of luck dude, hopefully this isn't going to be a major problem...
i don't really know how the navi is "sun-damaged" i mean it is a screen after all...

if both mirrors were working at one point then i'd assume they both are supposed to work.

i'd get it checked out and talk to your "friend" if he isn't being honest with you i'd ask to give it back

Only the passenger mirror goes down on my '02 Type S but the mirror selector switch that selects left or right has to be in the center. I too found out that when cars are priced cheap it because work needs to be done. Mine needs work too but I am in a learning mode.
