i just bought a 00 TL with 132k milages....i was using sport mode...and cruising at 50 miles..and want to down shift...but....the trany don't want to down shift....up shift perfect.

 

i wouldn't play around with that sport shift, if i were you. These transmissions are terrible

 

It wont let you downshift to avoid damage to the transmission.
You can downshift if the speed & rpm are right.

 

there are set speed/rpm limits the computer will allow/deny a downshift

If the requested shift would put it in redline- the shift is denied
the dash display will flash the requested gear then go solid in the current gear
reduce speed/rpm and try again

Beware of wearing 2nd and 3rd gear clutch packs--downshfifts put excess wear and heat in them= trans failure

Please tell us what gear and speed you were attempting- see if there is another issue for you to be aware of
hint: reading the threads in the main area plus Problems and Fixes section will teach you most of the TL-s weak points and things to watch for- maitenance to do etc

Tom, If im allowed to call you that,
but i think its more respectful for all the work / help you do for us.

Say your in a big complex that (aka: the gym/national training center that i go to every other day) you have to travel over a lot of speedbumps... for about 2 min.
Instead of letting the car shift from 1-3 between bumps, is it / would it be better just to use tiptronic / SS and keep it 2nd the entire time? - and just keep the speed down to say 20km/h / 10+ ish mph?
Ive tried this last night and i can make it through the entire thing in 2nd without downshifting and the speed and rpm are perfect.
Is what im doing better for the clutch packs and can i apply this logic to other similar scenarios?
