00 TL Owner Bought a 92 Legend

Hello fellow 2GTL owners and enthusiasts,

I just acquired a 1992 Legend LS 4-door Vintage Grey Metallic with 144k. I am excited to say the least. I wanted to see what our community's opinion on 2G Legends entails. Any input is welcome, good or bad. I know we have some retired techs that know more about Acuras/Hondas than most humans. Very excited to get my hands on the legend-ary C-series engine!

Looking forward to your responses.

Haven't seen a running legend that didn't overheat, smoke or look like trash since I was overseas in the mid 2000s. Some people used to give them away for free when they were getting ready to leave the island. lol

Check out forum member Acura2g558's youtube channel, he has a refurbish series on his 92 Legend Coupe.
He hangs in the modern Facecreep & J-series communities relating to the 2G CL/TL's rather than these grizzled forum pages these days.
Though, if you choose to share your journey here, that's a good thing since the 2G TL forum has turned into

I have heard they are notorious for BHG, specifically around cyl 3 and 6 due to clogged EGR ports. An EGR and IM cleaning is definitely in my near future. I bought this baby for $800 and already got it to pass SMOG here in Cali, so things are on the up.

Zeta, thanks for providing this link. Looks like a fun series. If only mine was the Type II 6-speed coupe, we'd be building a racecar haha. I'll try and get some pics posted to provide some life on the forum and then you guys can roast away

Not a bad looking Acura time machine. Very shiny

I joke about the overheating because a couple years ago, I helped my old boss replace head gaskets on a early 90s legend. He was super cheap and had added a block sealer additive when it started losing coolant. The car overheated more than once and he had also let it sit for several years before attempting to fix it. When we pulled the heads the coolant passages where all gummed up with the sealer....
He must've bought the cheapest ebay gasket kit available and also didn't bother to machine the heads. So, it was to no surprise that the new gaskets didn't fix anything. He ended up selling it to some sucker who must've thought it was a simple fix. But, the sad image of that billowing cloud behind the car as it drove off will forever be ingrained in my head.

So here's a preliminary list:
Transmission flush x2 Shifting smooth and clear fluids. Barely anything on the magnet plug.
Oil and filter change Wix filter and Mobil 1 high mileage. Couldn't bring myself to run conventional, we'll see what starts seeping.
Coolant Flush Old coolant completely failed float tests. Had some debris in catch pan, radiator replacement when I do the timing belt and water pump.
Brake fluid flush Nothing to note
Engine air filter replacement The old one had tons of feathers inside??
Power steering fluid change - Darker than I'd like
Front Struts and bushings - Blew last night. Looks quite sexy slammed haha, pic below
Sway bar and control arm bushings - probably just replace the whole control arm, bushings are out of stock everywhere.
Brakes all around - 3mm, Yikes!
Timing belt - Unknown when last done (if ever)
Water Pump - Unknown when last done
Radiator, upper/lower hoses, thermostat - Original rad, debris in old coolant points to replacement
EGR and IM cleaning - keep the BHG at bay
Fuel injector cleaning
Throttle body cleaning
Spark plugs and coil check - going to replace plugs with tune up
Fast Idle Air Control Valve replacement - weird surge when cold start, fine when warm. Runs through coolant system.
Intermittent clicking sound in front right wheel - either a broken caliper clip or busted wheel speed sensor. ABS light stays on with no codes
ABS module - shorting issues and bad control modules can lead to ABS light staying on with no codes
Convert R12 A/C system to R134a - I'm tempted to just vacuum system and put some R134a and see what happens.
Rear driver window has no power
No power to radio or aftermarket Sony 10 disc changer in trunk - good excuse to update whole system
Moonroof - has power but no movement, motor just keeps turning. Assuming gear track is busted.
Auto window switch not working
Window lock switch busted

I just hope my TL doesn't get jealous....

Looking forward to this thing being restored. Definitely not enough C-series Hondas in this world. That paint looks great! Just replace those hose clamps on the upper radiator hose in the future. Ring gear clamps wear the hose out over time.

Finished up the front struts today. Pulled the old ones out to find there were no bump stops to be found! The old bump stops had completely disintegrated as you can see below. The old girl did not fight me much - only issue being that a lock bolt on the right fork sheared off. Drilled a pilot hole through the opposite side, switched to a larger gauge bit and righty-loosie'd that sucker out with the impact drill. I also got the interior lights swapped over to white LED and got the windshield wiper fluid system to work again; the one-way valves had crumbled and clogged the system. She might not look as sexy, but can take bumps like a champ again!

Got the new head unit installed today. Once I determined there was power to the harness and the radio fuses were still good, I felt confident the old head unit was just fried. Ordered this BOSS Elite unit with harness adaptor from Crutchfield; install was fairly easy. Hardest part was dealing with the birds nest that was left behind from the trunk CD changer custom job.

Found a switch under the drivers dash along the way.... Unfortunately, it was disconnected. Based on the splices to the ignition, it was an old kill switch. My guess is that the old owner disconnected it because they kept hitting it with their leg. Definitely a poor placement and wrong switch type; probably the same guy who botched the CD changer.

Nice. Shame that the OG head unit couldn't be saved. Curious which struts you used. That kill switch is rigged even by my standards. Good luck fixing the wiring in this thing.

Had one and sold it in 2009 or so with 200k. And it was stupid because wasn't any problem with it. Edit, didn't have airconditioning because it used old refrigerant. It is I think why I did sold it.
