My shift plate was scratched badly, and I was thinking about getting it chromed.

I removed the shift plate, sanded it down and painted it with chrome spray paint that I bought for $1.99.

I think it came out pretty good and thought posting the pic would let others know what it looks like before doing it.

I agree, not as nice as yours but I'll take a 5th gear over a chrome shiftplate. (this is where the smiey would go if I knew how to do it)


Turn your shift handle counter clockwise and it will loosen, I had to use a plyers to get mine off.

Pop the tab on the right side of the plate. Then use a flathead screw driver to loosen the black plate around the shift plate, then do the same on the shift plate.

Looks nice, but does it peel or anything. I like it, I might do it to mine.

 

The real chrome that @cur@ has is for 99 only as for that model year, Acura painted silver on top of the Chrome. So all you have to do with the 99 shiftgate is to strip the top paint off to get that cool chrome look.

Only if u have a 99, u can take the layer of paint off, becuase under it its chrome already

 

It does not look like true chrome, more like a flat silver. You could spray on a clear coat to increase the gloss.

I have only had it on a few days so I do not know if it will peel. If it does, I have a 98% full spray paint can.

 

why dont you just get the shift plate chromed????

 

I didn't want to pay the $50 - $80 to get the one piece chromed.

Why not get a TL-S instead of adding mods to your engine? (even though I am thinking about doing the same to to my car)

It was a simple decison of cost vs. value.

 

I'll take 3rd gear at 125 in my 4 speed over 4th at 125 in your 5 speed.

are you sure? sounds fishy, considering that you cant redline.

 

99 have 4 gears so each gear will go further in speed... than a 5 speed. our 4th gear will do 125 but we still have a whole extra gear so while we are at 3k rpm in 4th doing 125 they are at 5k in 4th doing 125...

 

3rd gear goes to 110 mph. I hate my 4spd....not only because is automatic, but because the 5 spd is so much better specially after 110 mph.....4th gear in our cars just sucks.

yeah but in a racing situation...the extra 15 mph you get out of 3rd will throw you ahead after the 5spds hit 4th...so we'll be playing catch up to the 99's...and our fourths wont gain much on your fourth....assuming equal hp

 

I don't think so.....there is a reason why they have gear ratios!!!

Ours might shift at a higher speed but is also slower to get there......you are assuming both cars are shifting at the same time, but in reality, by the time with finish 3rd the 5spd is almost done with 4th...... sorry man, our 4spd will not beat a 5spd anytime with same mods.

 

Not alot of places will spend the time to chrome plate something like that. It's also plastic rather then metal.

I called around to 5 places before, and all of them told me it not worth it for them to do it.

all you have to do is remove the paint on the surface of the shifter thing, and you get phat chrome

 

Just to clear things up a bit...
The TLs are Tiptonic, Stage shift, however u wanna call...

4speed : If u leave in normal 4D, it will do 120 in 3rd, redling and shift to 4th. If u Switch to tiptonic, you can do up to 125 to almost 130 at 7200RPM killin ur car...and reach up to 147 like i did....NEVER bit 5speed at long run...short burst...close call...depends in driver

5speed : info in alright, exept 4speed will keep up if not pass (depending on driver) but after the 5speed reaches 110 it will leave 4speed behind couse it will rev faster.

O i forgot...CHROME plate looks pimp, id rather pay the 50-80 than paint myself and get a MEDIOCRE fake look that will make me unhappy everytime i see it.

I have '99TL 64kmiles, WW kit, OEM spoiler, and no money for more mods!
