Tire size question

I need some advice with my 2006 RL, I am about to buy a set of DWS's but I would like to go to a slightly larger tire. I would like to go slightly wider and more importantly more sidewall. What size can I safely install on the factory rims without any issues. I dont want it to rub when I have 5 people in the car or when I am turning. Rite now I have 245/50/17's.

There are two issues that you are going to run into.

First, the factory wheels are 8" wide. 245-255 width tires are just about max. You can feasibly smash just about any size tire you want onto them but the sidewalls will bulge so much it will look terrible. The tread will also start to crown with wider tires on stock wheels.

Secondly, there aren't many options in 17" tires that go wider, (without rubbing), while staying close to the stock diameter. The optimum size for what you want to do would be something like a 265/45R17. There aren't any tires made in that size.

I would keep the stock size if you're sticking with 17" wheels. Once you move up to 18" or 19" wheels you have a lot more options, especially with a wider wheel.

Thanks for the reply, yeah tire rack doesnt even have one tire in 265-45! How about 275? Too wide?

The DWS in stock size have quite a bit of sidewall, ~4.8 inches, and it sticks out pretty far over the wheel edge. When I put them on my car, the manager at Discount Tire said, "What size are these? They look huge." What is your concern to push you towards larger tires? I can't say that I remember the OEM Michellins being the same, but the DWS 245/50/17 are very beefy. Any more would look like a truck tire.

Thanks for the reply, I am concerned about the potholes here in NYC. There big enough to swallow a truck nevermind this thing! LOL I have gotten a few bubbles with these michellins so I figured a bit more meat may help.

So I guess the DWS is the way to go huh??

Same thing. Nothing made in a 275/45R17 at all. A 275/40R17 is too short IMO, nearly a full inch shorter than stock. Also, a 275 width tire is recommended for a 9" or wider wheel. If you want to stick with the OEM 17's you'll also want to stick with the OEM 245/50R17 tire size.
