For those of you with 19" wheels for your RL

Just how limited of a tire selection would I be if I replaced the PAX wheels with ASA 19"?

The wheel I'm looking has the following offset:
45mm Backspacing: 6.29" Bolt Pattern: 5-120

The recommended tire size is a 255/40-19 size but the available options are not as numerous as 18". According to my local tire dealer the Sumitomo HTR Z III is a good option without spending a lot money. Does anyone run this combo on their RL? What would I be loosing here besides a little road comfort?

Actually, the proper size is 245/40-19, of which there are very few in all seasons, many more in summers. At the time the 255/40-19 was recommended, in 2006, IIRC, this was the closest size for which there was any choice, limited though it may have been, and still is.

18" wheels, which use 245/45-18 have plenty more choices.

See the other active thread in this forum.

I have a PAX equipped car, and I have a set of BBS RE 19x8.5 with 255/40-19 Yokohama Advan S4s.

You can read about it here

I don't recall anyone with ASA 19's, but here is a thread on ASA 18's
https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...998&highlight=

Backspacing is only part of the equation. Call ASA and find out about fitment. It is the area from the back of the spokes to the mounting face that is critical, which I have shaded in yellow.

Thanks Chas, I will give ASA a call and verify the size and confirm those wheels will take the 245/40. I prefer to keep all-seasons on the car, (wife's car,) so I'll take a look at my options but a quick look online shows that both Kumho and Goodyear Eagle RS-A's are available in that size. I've had good luck with both those tires in the past with other cars but the cost difference do3esn't seem to be as bad as I expected.

Those wheels will fit fine, TireRack guarantees it.

255/40/19

Not that I am necessarily advocating 20's, because the wheels are so heavy, but just so that you are aware, look at your tire choices in 18 and 20, and you will find a much wider selection, and lower prices, for 245/45-18 and 245-35/20 than you will for 245/40-19.

This selection and price factor may be something you wish to consider as you will be changing rubber more frequently if you get higher performance tires than all season grand touring class.

I do not regret the 19 purchase, but I know I have a limited selection and will be paying $$$ for the rubber.

IMO 20's are just too big and as you said, heavy.

Chas, I will be looking at All-seasons touring tires as this is my wife's car. While I care about summer performance tires on my car, for her it's a waste of money and capability to be honest.

I haven't commited 100% on buying these wheels but I'm close to it. Hopefully, next year or so when I need tires there will be a great selection of rubber for these wheels.

20" tires are a lot cheaper than 19" tires and there is a lot more selection of 20".

As for the rims, , not a fan. Either go bling, a style Touge had, or A Spec.

In that case, you may wish to look at 18's. Since you are sticking with Grand Touring All Seasons, I will presume that you are not looking for a real bump in performance over what you have.

There is a huge choice of many different tires in 245/45-18. Using the Tire Rack as a convenient example, there are 7-8 choices in Grand Touring All Season vs 2 choices in the 245/40-19. If you expand the selection filter to any all season tire there are 32 choices in 245/45-18 vs only 7 choices in 245/40-19, and the prices are way better.

There is more choice in 18" wheel styles, and 18" wheels are also generally lighter, less expensive, as are the tires. The 245/45-18 wheel tire comboo will be the same diameter as your current PAX tires. 45 series rubber is also less prone to sidewall damage.

Call me a chauvinist pig, but when it comes to women, I find few that I know who are genuinely interested in wheels and tires. While your wife may be different, you may be able to purchase a quite satisfactory set of wheels and save some bucks to spend more money on the tires or whatever. More importantly, you will be assured of, and not have to hope for, more choice when you have to change your tires out.

19"s and 20"s look good, but they start to get awfully heavy unless you go with forged or something like the Enkei MAT technology.

Great side benefit....the whole 18" package tends to be lighter. You will notice a huge difference in the unsprung weight. The car will feel "livelier" to accelerate and feel as if it stops better (I cannot quantify this, because I have not done any testing, but it is a clear seat of the pants feel, even to a passenger). I saved 92 lbs of unsprung weight over the PAX tires with my set up, and while my wife easily notices the difference in unsprung weight, I know she will never test the limits of the tires. The unsprung weight advantage helps me justify the cost of the wheels and tires, but that is a different story!
