Is it possible to go with 255/50/17 on stock tires

Tirerack only lists 2 kinds of tires for stock substitution, for high performance all-season. If I go 255/50/17 or even 255/45/17 I get more choices. Has anyone tried different tires in different ratios yet?

According to an online tire size calculator, if I go with 255/50/17, when my speedo reads 60 mph, I am actually going 60.9 mph.

If I go with 255/45/17, when my speedo reads 60 mph, I am actually going 58.6 mph.

The small change in width to 255 mm will give you a little more rim protection and should fit fine IMHO.

I believe 255/45/17 will have a more sporty and aggressive look, no?

I wish I could get 18's... but it's won't happen anytime soon...

I believe the idea is that you need to stay within 2% of stock. The lower profile choice is outside of that range.

I have read that you want to keep the diameters within 2% maybe 3%, otherwise braking and handling can be affected adversely. I don't know if it is true, but that would say the lower profile choice is way over spec, or I guess in this case, under spec.

The other thing you will do, of course, is through off the speedometer and perhaps more importantly, the odometer.

You could, but really once you go to 255's, you should use a minimum of 8.5" width for the rims.
