Anyone ran 255/55/17 for winter tires?

Anyone ran 255/55/17's on their RL (for winter tires)?
I found a great deal on some Hakkapelittas brand new, but that seems a bit large...

Not sure why you want to do that. The rolling diameter is much bigger than stock. You will throw all the computer systems off, and handling and braking will be affected.

The correct alternate winter tire size would be 225/55-17...they will work more efficiently in the snow than wider tires due to their narrower section width and longer contact patch.

And sorry for the digression. Answer to your question is no I cannot recall anyone running that size in an RL

+1 with what Chas2 said.

Even though you are getting a great deal now, but in the long run you may be doing damaged to the transmission or AWD drivetrain. The transmission's shift points, and VSA are dependent on that overall diameter. If you increase or lower it too much then you will affect those systems, because the car won't be able to tell if you are basically going REALLY REALLY slow, or if you are losing traction consistently and engaging the AWD all the time.

I am with Chas2 and say don't do it. Either get some good all seasons and drive cautiously, or get some dedicated winter tires that are the same overall diameter if not very similar.

actually it looks more for speed fluctuations, along with comparing them to the rest of the wheel speeds to see if one is spinning slower or faster too much

overall speed (especially if all tires match) does not matter for awd operation very much
and shifts points not so much, BUT it will be harder on the tranny from less effective tractive effort (the actual torque at the tire contact patch) (or you go smaller diameter, and gas mileage will suffer)

Yes they will fit. I'm running that setup now with my OEM 17's.

Awesome...I knew I read this thread before. Anyways, I needed snows for my stock rims. Out of the blue, my neighbor (who just bought a brand new Nissan Altima with 16" rims...) comes up to me and says she has some almost brand new 225/55R17 Nokian snows (less than 1k miles) sitting in the garage from her previous car and wondered if I could use them. I said, "Free?", she said "Free!". I told her to hold on to them and I'd check to see if those size would fit. I looked for this thread and sure enough (according to Chas2) they'll work just fine. I got Bremmer 18's on right now and going to put these snows on the stocks for winter....Yeah, I'm happy..Christmas came early for me. Well, and sad cause now wifey knows I have that extra money to buy her something. I was too happy, I shouldn't have told her they were free...
