In the RLs that have the usb jack; is the jack only for charging or can you plug in a flash drive and play music off of it? I'm looking to add that functionality to my 2006 RL that currently has no usb or aux. I don't care about bluetooth but I would like to place my music on a flashdrive and have it play thru the existing car stereo. I'd rather do that than install an aux input and play music\podcasts thru my phone. Thanks Acurazine.

 

Take pics of your USB jack, if its aftermarket then you will be able to play music.

 

My car does not have one. I wanted to know if the usb that is Acura factory installed will play music thru a flash drive or if it just provides power.

 

The 05-06 RL does not have OEM USB or Aux port, 07-08 came with Aux port and 09-12 RL has USB as well as Aux input and the OEM USB drive use to play music from a thump drive.

I think you mean '09+? I'm not sure if that USB port even has enough power to charge some of the newer phones...

@truonghthe my friend you read. You are not answering the question I am asking. Not all usb ports pass data. Some just provide voltage. On those, you can't plug in a flash drive and access the data. What I am trying to find out out is what kind of usb port is in the 7-8 RL. Some 7-8 RLs have a usb port AND an aux jack. I test drove an 08 RL, so I know what i'm talking about.

 

Was there a chance that the 08 you test drove just so happen to have an aftermarket USB port installed?

 

Maybe @thoiboi. I guess it doesn't matter. I need to install one in mine. I've seen a couple where you connect to xm box in trunk.

 

Probably aftermarket installed. Don't doubt what you saw but it is *possible* it was OEM but I doubt it. My '07 doesn't have a USB post. I was looking at an '08 on a dealer lot (Acura Libertyville) the other day for my dad, no USB port either... Possibly had something like this DIY'ed in:

Maybe it was an aftermarket setup. Thanks. I know there is a device that will provide a usb and an aux connection that uses one channel of the XM radio so I don't have to go into the dash. Gonna check that out. Thanks all.

 

Appear that Acura made USB port for 08 RL and we are not aware. Especially after multiple people told OP the 05-08 RL does not come with USB port. Well if he insist then I gonna leave it alone.

My 2011 RL usb do play MP3 files. It supports up to USB 3.0 blue up to 32 gb drives.
I have never tried charging my phone via USB because I use the cigarette lighter socket with and adapter to charge my phone.

 

A picture of this USB port would make it obvious whether it was OEM (which I doubt) or aftermarket. I followed the changes for each model year pretty closely, and I know the 05-08 (pre-MMC) did not have any OEM USB.
