rear sunshade

I have been having problems with my rear sunshade. It was working when it wanted to now it does not work at all. I have checked and made sure there was nothing was in the way. It still won't come up. I get a bad feeling its the button.

Did you check the fuse?

Slightly off topic but related-

Is there a way to overide the feature where the rear sunshade goes down when shifting into reverse? Drives me nuts to continually have to put it back up

I don't mind it going down in reverse but I wish it went back up again when you put it in D. No, there is no handle on its operation. If you want it up all of the time then put it up and pull the fuse. I have mine up all the time to stop headlights behind me a night and to sheild the sun during the day.
This is just one of the many software bugs in the car. If the software writers could actually drive, they would have done a lot of things differently. (the later model RL's do fix a lot of the earlier anoyances). E.G. lights Ding Ding Ding and no TPMS in Cruise and MID menus etc..

My rear-view mirror has an auto darken sensor that kills headlight reflection. If it is on, there is a green light on the bottom of the mirror. I thought all RLs had this. Is it just a tech or '07+ feature?

Also the sunshade going down seems like a pretty necessary safety feature, but I understand why you would want it to go back up. You could just tint your windows.

All RL's have the auto dimming rear view mirror feature.
I do not like tinted windows - if I want it darker then I wear sunglasses but at night I need more light reaching my eyes, not less. I did, however, use heavy tint all round in my MDX but that was to protect the soft Milano leather from UV rays. It would be nice if manufacturers used UV resistant glass without the tint. I think that Lexus has it, have you noticed that there are few Lexus's with tint? (unless it's been riced).

If you need more light at night, why would you put the sunshade up?

I'm not sure where the fuse is. I didn't think of that thank you. I'll check it out and see.

I don't need more light in the mirror, I need more light everywhere but behind me including inside the car. My friend has a black interior RL with heavy tint all round and you can hardly see anything in the car. If you like wearing sunglasses at night then you will love a car with tint all around.

I checked the manual and it has every fuse but the rear sun shade. The same goes for mediafire. Looks like I'll be headed to your neck of the woods on the other side of central TX.

I didn't realize that PDF was as useless as it is. There is a wiring.pdf in the service manual folder that shows the fuses. On page 85, you can see the diagram. There are two fuses involved. Fuse 21 controls the shift position system power, why the shade goes down in R, and fuse 11 controls the controller unit power. I think 11 is the first fuse to check.

For those interested in disabling the auto down on reverse, you possibly could interrupt the circuit at the brown, white or purple wire. However, there is no telling what possible interactions this may cause. The brown wore looks like the best option.

Now I'm really sick. I called the dealer and found there is no fuse for the rear sun shade. They want to look at the car, the tech said if its the button the entire overhead unit would have to be replaced. Oh over $1300. He said there are several wires involved with the sun shade. WOW

Every electrical component has a fuse. The service manual explicitly shows fuses 11 and 21 connected to the rear sunshade motor. You can get the entire front ceiling module for $775 on oemacuraparts.com. Part number 36600-SJA-A32Z_, where the underscore is a color code. Remember who's intentions the stealership has at heart.

Here is the diagram. You should fax it to the Tech, and tell him he's an idiot.

that one little module in the ceiling is a $700+ part... darn I'm glad I have a CPO / extended warranty... wow that's expensive.

Honestly, the switch could probably be repaired before the assembly needs replacing. It's probably a shitty solder joint that needs to be re-done.

I was able to fix my sunshade not working by taking apart the overhead console and cleaning the button to activate the shade. Works perfectly now. Took me not more than 45 minutes.
