Real-Time Nav Traffic
Yeah Right. I've written on this before, but I was hoping that it would get better over time. However, the delay in showing traffic flow is still bad. This morning I heard a traffic report on the radio of very slow traffic due to a stall westbound on San Mateo bridge at 7:45. Not sure how long it had been there already. I drove eastbound past the stall at 8. Back-up was at least 2 miles long and was mostly stopped. I watched Navtraffic for rest of my commute and it showed "blue" in Westbound direction on the bridge until 8:12. That's a 30 minute delay in reporting. Fortunately, I was going opposite direction and did not have to deal with it. Would be frustrating to sit in stopped traffic for 30 minutes while your "Real-Time" NavTraffic showed all is well!
It seems the updates from XM occur about every 5 minutes (i.e., 8:07, 8:12, 8:17, etc.), so there must be longer delays upstream from XM. The incident report icon was there well before the traffic flow changed, yet my understanding is that the incident reports are manually entered.
If the data is 30 minutes old, its practically useless.

I have posted on this issue many times and the conclusion is that the Traffic info only serves to make the screen look pretty, it has no real use as a real time system. Until more cars have this system and more funds are appropriated to its functionality it will continue to be a "toy".
