Is it possible to retrofit the 09-11 Navi to 05-08?

Hey guys,

New member here. I've always wanted an RL ever since I watched this Japanese Legend commercial.

Of course at the time I couldn't afford it so I put the desire to the side. Than I saw the new Hyundai Genesis sedan's rear end and it reminded me so much of the RL (subjective of course).

I thought to myself, "Hey, it's been a couple of years now, I could probably get one used!" So off to the used car dealerships I go to test drive. My excitement was brought down by the ugly resolution and graphics of the navigation! I had sat in an 09-11 RL and the screen resolution and graphics were much better.

Since those cars are just an MMC, does anyone know if its possible to retrofit the navigation hardware (screen, harddrive, bluetooth module - for music, USB module)?

Speaking of retrofit, Im looking at 2 different RLs. One with parchment leather and one with black leather. Is it possible to retrofit the black "wood" from the 09-11 RLs to the 05-11 RLs? What kind of adjustments do I need to make? Im only interested in the dash, door and steering wheel wood/plood, not the center console or shift knob.

Also, is there a "black wood" steering wheel for a black interior? Or only for parchment and gray?

Thanks for all your help everyone!

The resolution of the new screen should not be any better than the old one. There have been a few people here who updated the nav disc and compliment the upgraded graphics. If the resolution were truly poor, I think more people who have hacked the screen for videos would be complaining. It sounds like you need a new nav disc over a new screen. Acura Music Link would integrate USB and iPod, and the only thing you would be missing compared to '09 would be the ability to stream music via Bluetooth.

Love the video.... I think the retro-fit is do-able.... if you can find all the parts.... head unit, Bluetooth module, and the harness to connect them all....

There are some drawbacks to the Acura Music Link as it doesnt allow you to select individual songs. You can only play all songs by artist, playlist, album or shuffle. I might have gotten it wrong, as I dont have actual experience with it. In addition to that, only the elapsed time and track number information is available on the audio screen/navi screen.

And regarding the upgraded graphics from the new nav disc, having read a lot of posts I remember that some people said that the graphics did not change with the new nav disc, its just new POI and route/map updates. Again, I might be wrong.

there r other audio solutions to the pre-09 RL's audio.... I for one opted for Dice Mediabridge. It's a simple add-on to the existing head unit... This unit comes with Bluetooth (stream music via bluetooth), USB, iPod connection (via usb), AUX. Mediabridge display music information on the navi screen and you can control the songs from the steering wheel buttons. The major draw back is that this unit cannot co-exist with the XM/XM traffic.... I had to use a 3-way switch to toggle between XM and Mediabridge

Yes, I also thought the Genesis' rear looked like almost a direct copy of the RL's...even the front end of the Genesis has design cues that look like the RL's.
