Thumbs up Old dog, new tricks - Nav distance

One of the things I liked about the Nav in my short-lived IS350 was that I could touch anyplace on the screen and it would display the distance to that point. It was a quick and easy answer to the question, "How far is that?"

Well, while coming back from from my brother's house in East Texas in the RL yesterday, the occasion arose to know the distance to a couple of points. It was a matter of choosing an alternate route because of an XM report of a bad accident miles ahead.

On a whim, I moved the crosshairs up to a highway intersection 15 or 20 miles ahead, then pushed the controller knob. Voila! Up in the upper right-hand corner was the distance to that intersection.

I may be the only guy who didn't know about this, but the again maybe someone else missed it in the manual. It's a cool and potentially helpful feature.

Just move your crosshairs to the NAVI forum and press the knob.

I found that out recently as well, although moving the crosshairs to select the point of reference requires better articulation than point and tap. Still the Acura NAVI is my fav of all I looked at.

*Correction* I think it was actually in the upper LEFT-hand corner that the distance showed.

Don't know why I said right-hand. Tired, I guess.

Nope Mike, Mine showed up in the upper right hand corner, and then it asked me if I wanted to set it as destination

Wow, I really WAS tired Saturday when I discovered this.

So I just went out and tried it in the driveway ... turns out we're BOTH right.

When you place the crosshairs anywhere on the map, it shows the distance in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. Push the controller, and it displays a dialogue box with the address of the crosshairs, the distance in the upper right-hand corner of the dialogue, and the options to set as destination, add to address book, etc. below that.

So now I've discovered I don't even need to push the controller if I just want to know distance. It is, however, distance "as the crow flies" from the looks of it, so you have to take that into consideration.

But I think it's still a cool tool, and it only took me 9 months to find it!
