Nav System Hard Freeze
Anyone have their RL navigation system go into a hard freeze?
This happens in a specific spot (as the system is about to change to the highway exit visual).
When it happens no buttons work except for the volume knob and radio presets. Even the voice button (on the steering wheel) won't work.
Based on my computer experience, I think it could be a scratch on the DVD or an issue with the drive.

My first check would be to remove and clean the disc. The vehicle has to be on to do this. There are several posts on how to have your unit run a self diagnosis. If you determine that it is a DVD drive, or nav unit problem...and your car is out of warranty...you can remove the DVD nav unit and send it back to Alpine. Alpine has a flat rate repair of $150 plus $12--- 2nd day air return freight.

1. Car in warranty (lease).
2. DVD disc looks to have a tiny scratch.
3. Dealer not familiar with how a computer works and how scratched discs can freeze computers.
4. Ran self-diagnosis and it's fine (noises/bells are annoying).

I would call Alpine and confer with them that the scratch is the potential problem.
If they think it is, ask the dealer to swap out your disk to test if the NAVI freezes at the same spot.
If it does not freeze you know then it is the scratched disc you can work with the dealer or likely better, Alpine to see if they will replace you disc. I would not hold my breath, but better the DVD be the issue than the DVD drive.

Alpine is very easy to talk to you...they will try to help you diagnosis your issue...however there are a lot of considerations here.
The disc is not an expendable part like tires, brakes, wiper blades, and light bulbs....4 years or 50k plus what ever good will there is.
It should be under warranty.... period. They won't and shouldn't provide any update. There is a TSB on how dealers should handle this issue and tells them how to go about getting a new disc.
