Nav Screen Died, Then Resurrected

Started the car to drive home from work today. The Nav screen was a blank. Retarted - still nothing. So drove home with no Nav ( not that I needed it ) , no proper A/C controls, no voice commands and no trip computer display. Got home, restarted , still nothing. Then used the spare key fob, restarted and the Nav screen came alive. Switched over to the regular key fob and restarted and the Nav seems to be OK.

Anybody knows what's going on ?

I really worry about these weird intermittent problems - will be taking a trip to Vermont soon and I need the nav to work.

I would certainly take the car to the dealer. This could be a sign of a defective navi drive. These drives cost 2 thousand dollars new from the dealer.

i am not making any diagnosis here...but if dealer sayes your nav drive is bad, remove it from the car and send it directly to Alpine...they will repair for a flat rate of $150 + frt.

It's likely still under warranty. No need to pay for a repair if he's under the 50,000 mile limit. Take it to the dealer.

thanks a lot all. The nav worked ok on the drive to work this morning and conversations with 2 NJ dealers suggest that if I bring the car in and the problem is not apparent, there'll be nothing they can do. So I'm going to have to wait for it to really die and not resurrect itself before I bring it to the dealer. I guess I'll be driving in Vermont next week with an atlas handy and some mapquest print outs.

I had the same situation occur only once within the first couple of months that I owned the car.

I hopped out of the car to take some pictures, hopped back in and the NAV screen was completely dark when I started the ignition. I cycled power a couple of times and it still wouldn't come up. I then drove a ways, stopped again to see if there was a fuse somewhere to pull and when I restarted the screen came back. It has not happened since.

Thanks, hope that's how it turns out for me. Today, the nav screen was doing OK too. Just don't want it to let me down when I start my road trip tomorrow.
