Nav Question - 2005

I have a 2005 RL.

In the Nav system is there a way to specify a particular street as an “avoid area?”

In the area where I live there are two roads that parallel each other for several miles. They are the main routes in/out of the town. The Nav system always directs me to us one of them but the other one is almost always a better choice. (The first one is a county road, the second one is a local road but the second one has more lanes, higher speed limit, fewer lights so it’s a better choice.) Is there a way I can tell my Nav system to ignore the first road unless it’s the only option (which would be rare)?

Thanks
Peter

There are a few things that come to my mind. After you identify your destination (and guidance has started), press Menu. "Change Routing Method", "Detour", or "Avoid Streets" might work. You'll probably need to try each to see what works best for you.

Prior to my RL, I had an 06 Explorer. Its NAV would let you avoid a particular street. The options I had were, "avoid for this trip" or "always avoid this street".

I haven't found anything like that with the Acura unit.

The Nav system has an avoid areas function. Look in the Nav Manual for how it works...I have never had cause to use it, but suppose that it would be useful for a situation as you describe.

I think that you have to avoid for each trip, I have never seen a permanent "avoid".

db22 is correct. Avoid Roads is selectable from a plotted route and not a database default feature. I have a similar issue whereas the NEWER Navi DVD has added a road connection from my sub division that does not exist (and was not on the original DVD the 06 RL came with). Subsequently, whenever I plot a route from my home, it tries to route me through this non-existent road connection. Very annoying as I now wait to engage the plotted route until after I leave the sub-division. And yes, I have reported to NavTeq...hoping the upcoming release will have it corrected.

From the 2006 RL Navigation Manual:

Avoid Streets
From the Change route by screen, if
you say or select Avoid Streets, the
system displays a list of streets that will
get you to your destination. This feature
allows you to avoid a street or streets
along your route. This is helpful if you
know of road construction, closures, or
excessive traffic along the route. Simply
select the street or streets you wish to
avoid. You cannot avoid your current
street, or the streets of your waypoint(s)
or destination (system beeps if selected).
