4.73 navigation disc
Here's an idea...how 'bout *not* pirate these things. I know it's unlikely, but *maybe*, just maybe if Alpine can sell a few more legal copies the price can drop just a little bit for us honest folks.

That being said, I suspect there will always be people who would rather be dishonest than do the right thing...and they'll justify it by claiming that artist X/programmer Y/Company Z makes waaay too much money, anyway.
bmerton: I hate to break it to you, but you are insane if you think the copying of one navigation disc has ***ANY*** effect on the price of Alpine's markup for what is basically robbery. In five years, all GPS/GISINFO data will be free anyway.
It amazes me you think for a second that the price would FALL if no one copied an overpriced, outdated, buggy piece of software. How many copies of this disc do you think they really sell per year? Also, given what a pain in the ass it is to copy it, how many pirate copies do you think there are?

Continue your rationalization... Stick your heads in the sand... Continue to consider what you do a victimless crime...oops...I'm guessing Texas05RL doesn't consider it a crime, at all. You're right Texas05RL: copyright doesn't mean a damn thing.
And you have no grasp of basic economic concepts where it comes to retail pricing, in general. If it helps, think of a clothing store like, say, the Gap. Do you REALLY believe that some of their cost structure is completely unimpacted by shoplifting?
You are simply wrong, sir, and taking something to which you have no right. Pure and simple.

one reason to be tempted to copy -
Hey bmerton, how about the fact that they're issuing these upgrades about every week? I just bought (2 weeks ago) from Alpine the 4.64 and we're now on 4.73? I don't know what the diffs are, but if its bugfixes, or actual corrections in the data, I'm sure tempted.
I'd agree with you if these releases were yearly or even every 6 mos. but they're asking for it @ $200 per upgrade with releases this often.

I understand that. The "dream" part of my message was not that people would stop stealing, but was more an acknowledgment that we probably wouldn't see (much) by way of savings if people would just be honest. But your comment completely ignores basic rules of supply and demand and how the economy affects it.

the fundamentals of our economy are strong......
illustrate how the price points have followed your basic rule
and take it easy with the judgementalism re: dishonest vs right vs justify
espousing non sequitor quips don't help your soapbox
