2010 v4.81 nav

new version is now available.
tried to install 4.73 duplicated with disk utility, but got disc error after software downloaded. Had to revert back to 4.62.
the 4.62 version was a copy from my 08 mdx.
Doesn't look like anyone has successfully installed a non purchased version of 4.73 across the Acura/Honda community

It does not appear that any change in NAVI functionality was included, only map coverage updates to 4.73.

Anyone who buys, please report of any functionality or performance changes to the NAVI.

Gracias in advance.

I currently have 4.62. Does anyone know if there were functional updates included in 4.73? I drove a TL loaner a few weeks back and the screen had some updates, like the # of lanes was shown in a small pictograph in the upper right corner. this is probably due to the TL being HD based not DVD.
$185 for an upgrade disc is ridiculous considering an entire portable nav system can be had for the same or less.

I could have sworn 4.73 was $149. Lexus took $50 off their annual updates this year...what gives with Acura? And $10 shipping on top of the $185 seems a bit much.

Before you say it, I know - if you don't like, don't buy it. Understood.

Last year, they did offer for $149, but that was because of the debacle with the previous year's version which is well chronicled on this site. By the time they actually got something to work without locking up the nav systems or otherwise disabling the systems, depending, it seems, on the firmware installed, it was time for the next year's version.

This time, they actually had 4.72 running for a whole year before offering 4.8x

I don't think there is a copy available that works. I think they put some type of protection code into 4.73. I duplicated a 4.73 from an a loaner and it would not work. Did the same with 4.62 and it loads fine.
Could not find a web post regarding the disk error after the software upgrades with 4.73. Had to reload the older version.

I agree a new Nuvi is less than the Alpine disc

I have a the 4.13 version in my RL. If I purchase the new 4.81, I assume it will do the flash upgrade that came out with 4.62? I don't see why not, just wanted to make sure considering this is $185 and all.

I have seen no reference to a 2 disc set for the v4.81 in order to upgrade older versions. I would assume that they actually regression tested the latest version with all previous versions for a seamless upgrade. At least we can hope so.

After the last fiasco of upgrade failures and locked up NAVIs, let us hope we have done enough BETA testing for them on our dime.

It does not appear to include any new functionality over the v4.6 and v4.7 other than updated POIs, some map updates and Zagat updates.

Hopefully a member here will report in with details.

Anyone with an '05 RL v4.13 Nav disc upgrade straight to v4.81? I am considering buying it, but am afraid I might run into problems.

Thanks

They should list restrictions if you cannot go from 4.13 straight to 4.81. I would call them. I upgraded from 4.13 to 4.73. That was the purpose of the 2 DVD set. One DVD was a system update required for earlier versions before the data DVD is installed. Suspect same reason for 2 DVDs in 4.81 release.

If you have a handheld portable gps the navi updates are a lot more reasonable.. like 50 or 75 dollars.. I believe they are missing out on a lot of sales. I think they are overshooting what most people feel is reasonable. I wouldn't hold your breath for any functionality changes. I doubt they make your nav look like an 09 TL nav.. I cannot imagine. If they made these type of software changes, I may consider becuase I like the Real Time Traffic on the 09 tl much better-- the lines look clearer and easier to read..

I just received an 'invite' in the mail from Acura to pay $185 for the new DVD.

Since there appears to be no new NAVI functionality in the new version and just map updates, POI updates and ZAGGAT updates, I see no need. Further in Tampa Bay, EVERY major road is under construction with tons of new on and off ramps being added. As it appears now, my RL is capable of driving over bodies of water and retention ponds (Hey Ducks! Get out of the WAY!!!). So it is not an investment worth $185, or at least until the road construction subsides.

I will 'invite' Acura NOT to deposit my $185.

I used a copy of 4.64. Worked fine until I'd get about 3 hours from my house then I'd get a disk error. Every time, regardless of direction of travel. Very wierd. I kept my old 4.31 disk with me and would reload it to continue the trip. It would work fine. Now I just leep the 4.31 installed. Could never get a copy of 4.73 to work at all.

If the copy was not burned to a Verbatim disc then the brand of media is likely the problem. Not all media is created the same. For example, I am aware that Memorex brand causes the very failure issue you described above.

I have used all available brands of media in the market for burning V4.73 but I did not have any luck and wasted a ton of green. After reading several forums I understood that it is the issue with the way our drives burn the disk. PTP (parallel track path) vs OTP (opposite track path).
I have burned V4.62, 4.63, 4.64 downloaded form torrents on the cheapest brand of media available in the market (Ativa brand disks - from office depot costs like $3 for 10 disks). Don't waste any money on the media just my suggestion.
With V4.63 I had some disk reading errors but with V4.64 I have now which I am using from 4 months with out any errors and problems. Burn it with least possible speed.
By the way I upgraded from 4.31C version.

It was a Verbatim disc and I actually burned two. Exact same issue with each.

Try copying the disc onto a cheap media and let us know. I don't think there are any torrents available for the new 4.81 version.

Guys, here's the deal. In 4.73 Alpine/Acura/whoever changed the software so that the DVD drive will ONLY read non copied discs. Yes, it somehows knows the difference. So DVD-R, DVD+R, anything along those lines, it isn't going to work. That goes for any newer versions too.

With the price of GPS units coming down in price I can't see the car manufacturers keeping their $180 updates...it will eventually come down.

I have an 05 RL with 4.13 (maps from 2004), and despite my reluctance to overpay (and after a fruitless attempts at a more underhanded solution) I upgraded to 4.81. Actually it was a gift from my wife (who was growing tired of the old maps failing us), but even her Honda employee discount didn't save her from the $185. The FedEx package came the next day (free 2-day shipping, but since they shipfrom Memphis--FedEx's hub, 1-day isn't abnormal) and included two discs. One in a somewhat smashed jewel case (the firmware update) and another in a cardboard sleeve (the 4.81 update). Both discs required a 4 minute or so installation, and I never had to supply the code to unlock the Navi (which is good as I can't locate it). All in all, it was definitely a worthwhile upgrade, even if I still am irritated by the costs. I suppose for 5 years of updates it's ok, but I won't be doing this annually (unless I can unload my 4.81 disc for a decent return).

Yes, you got significant upgrades from 4.13, and I think it is worth the price of admission from 4.13. If you had 4.64 or 4.73, probably not, unless there were map upgrades in your area.

I just upgraded from 4.13 to 4.81 and I am very unsatisfied. All the roads and highways that were outdated in the old version are still missing in the new version. My sisters house was built in 2006 and her street and address are still missing in the new version. There are even tons of POIs that are missing. What a waste of money for me.

I upgraded from 3.3X to 3.6X mostly for new functionality such as one way streets, POIs, newer ZAGAT and DST correction for the clock.

Unfortunately the upgrade disc had map information in my neighborhood that is now incorrect, and was not incorrect on the older disc. The newer disc has roads connected or non existent that impacts my routing with the NAVI. It seems not only Acura but any NAVI supported by NAVTEQ got this incorrect information. When a local road was closed for repairs recently, i noticed a lot of traffic trying to navigate through my sub division which is ultimately a dead end on a lake. The new disc indicates there is a through connection to the other side of the lake (the road continues under the same name) but is not connected. The old disc was correct.

Further, EVERY major highway in Tampa is under road construction (mostly destruction) with new on / off ramps, and previous access roads gone. My NAVI thinks I am driving over bodies of water, through fields and even onto the airport runway!

Unless there is any usable functionality changes or additions to our NAVI systems, I do not plan to pay for flux mapping data for the next few years.

FYI, you can report mapping discrepancies to NAVTEQ (as advised by MyAcura.com).

http://update.navteq.com/

My problem is paying for incorrect map data, my reporting the errors and paying again for the eventual corrected copy. They should give credits to reported errors and discount the updates based on those credits.

So I have a 2005 RL with version 4.13 as well, What I really am trying to find out is what is different in the firmware updates that I will see on the unit after I upgrade it, I'm sure the mapping upgrades for where I'm driving will be fine.

Any tips on where to dl it? I checked a bunch of torrent sites and had zero luck finding a credible download. I currently have 4.56 in my '05 RL. Just looking for anything higher.

through a bit of trial and error I found out that I can copy my 2008 Navi using simple Nero DVD copy and be able to use that copy as long as the initial install is done from the original disc.

I have been using a copied disc for about a month now.

Technically speaking, local people can buy just 1 disc and multiply. The cost should come down enough not to be too upset about outdated info on a brand new disc.

Again, I have tried this with the 2008 copy or which I have the original.

If you want to see the changes, you can go to Acura's nav site: they list each versions update/upgrade. You'll punch in your model (ie RL ) and year, and it tells you what's what.

Look at the software changes implemented in 4.6x...this is the most extensive change. 4.7x and 4.8x have been mostly database changes as far as I can tell. I thought the 4.6x changes worthwhile, even though I lost the male voice, I gained a DST patch, new one way street functionality, etc.

Now that explains where the male voice went. I upgraded from 4.13 to 4.63 and my wife wanted the male voice. I could not figure out where that setting went and now it makes sense.

Thanks also for explaining the changes with 4.7 & 4.8. Since the 4.63 is working fine for me, I'll stick with that.

4.81

Does anyone know if 4.81 will auto re-route based on the traffic feed from XM or allow you so view alternatives and ETA's and let you chose which route.
TIA

It can use the traffic to help select the route or to alter it (off by default if I recall), but I don't believe you can view multiple routs as you're asking about. All in all, I never found traffic to be that worthwhile. My wife's car also has weather, which is even more useless.

That being said, I do still like the 4.81 upgrade, but I was coming from 4.13 or whatever was original in my 05 RL.

Traffic Rerouting

Saw that the 2010 RL has Traffic Rerouting (Traffic Rerouting can suggest alternative routes based on updated traffic conditions) is this software 4.81 or is it hardware specific to the 3rd Gens. TIA

Traffic Rerouting

Interstates and expressways are color-coded to indicate traffic flow speeds.
  • Icons indicate the location of incidents and traffic conditions affected by construction and weather.
  • Traffic Rerouting will suggest an alternative route if the system determines that the alternative is at least two minutes or 10% quicker.
  • The information is aggregated by NAVTEQ™ from multiple sources, including highway patrol collision reports and transportation departments.
  • The information is updated approximately every 90 seconds.
  • Following the 90-day free trial period, AcuraLink Real-Time Traffic data services are available on a subscription basis for a fee, which can be combined or separate from other XM® subscriptions.

Does it matter if the source I found says it's a TL disc?

No.

But look it up yourself on the acura navi site, and you put in TL and see what you get. This will be the 3G TL, of course, since the 4G is hard disk based.
