I think he is asking how do you store the personal data that goes along with your cars, such as all the thousands of breadcrumbs on the maps, address book, recent destinations, system preferences, etc. There must be some kind of flash memory on the unit. We know they are not writing to the DVD, if for no other reason, when you switch to a new software upgrade like 4.62, all your data remains, except for breadcrumbs where there is now a street, so there must be some storage medium either in the car, or in the DVD unit.

This is stored in flash memory. I believe the Alpine / Acura system used in the RL version is 2GB memory.
And before you melt over Ford's SYNC, the next version NAVI interface for Honda and Acura appears to be Microsoft Mobile OS. I cannot imagine it will not leapfrog SYNC by a wide margin. Right now Honda / Acura has a reputation for the slickest Navigation AND telematics. It would be wise for them to continue setting the benchmark. I have high hopes for the next Gen RL telematics.
