WTF Gas Guzzler Tax?

hey guys

As always i got bored and looked at the new caddy CTS-V sedan. which i really want to buy. like any of us, i studied and played with the "build your own" CTS-V. at the summary page, they added a gas guzzler tax of $2600. WTF!!!! ITS ONLY ON NEW CARS with less than avg 22mpg!. If you brought a used CTS-V with less than 1000 miles u wouldn't get that gas guzzler tax. this has been effective since 1978! did anyone know about this? (besides neuronbob, considering he has cts-v)

this makes me not want to buy a cts-v

LOL...

Your name is 'DiabloSVRacer', but you don't know about the Gas Guzzler tax?

It's for any cars that 'fail to meet the minimum fuel economy level of 22.5 mpg'

Including your 'Diablo SV'... ;-)

This does not include minivans, sport utility vehicles or pick-up trucks. It is intended to discourage the production and purchase of fuel inefficient vehicles. In determining the tax, the fuel economy figures used are different from the fuel economy values provided in the Fuel Economy Guide. This tax is collected by the IRS and paid by the manufacturer or importer after production has ended for the model year. It is based on the total number of gas guzzler vehicles which were introduced into commerce in the United States. The amount of the tax paid by manufacturer is displayed on the vehicle's fuel economy label on the window sticker of new cars.
Call it a SUV and you're good to go. They way the tax is worded, it should not be paid by the customer, but by the manufacturer for creating such an inefficient car. I think Cadillac is making a mistake by pushing this burden knowingly onto customers. Increase the MSRP, leave that "tax" off the receipt, and call it a day. That's bad marketing.

You're a fan of exotic cars and you aren't aware of a gas guzzler tax?

You're from Massachusetts, a state notorious for high taxes. What else don't you know?

In early 2000 I was looking at a 2000 Saleen S351Speedster and it had a gas guzzler tax and city fuel rating of 8 miles per gallon. I ended up buying an S281 Speedster instead.
