wiper blades

Wiper blade tore last week and had to replace. Did not have time to order inserts on the web, so went to local auto parts store. They did not have inserts, but had replacement blade assemblies that they showed in computer would fit. They were about $10 each.
However, OEM (2005) blades screw on instead of use the generic pin connector. (Unless there is something I could not figure out.)
I had to go to an acura dealer to get the inserts. For kicks, I asked the parts guy how much the acura blade assemblies were. He said $50/passenger, $75/driver. Unbelieveable.

The whole blade assemblies are still expensive even online ($50 and $40). That's why you just get the inserts at $8 for both.

I agree, but I needed to make semi-emergency repair and only had access to a regular auto parts store with no inserts in stock. Given that the blades were not expensive, I went that route before finding out they would not work. Had to wait until the next day to make it to Acura parts.

I do not understand why acura would not use a blade assembly with the universal style mount.

You could pull the inserts out of the replacement blades and use just the inserts.

what's strange is that if I look on ebay, they show blades for 2005 RL are 24" and 19" with j-hook attachment. My driver side was 28" and I could not see how the j-hook could possibly work

While I have used Honda inserts, others have also praised the PIAA silicone wiper blade inserts. for about $10 each also.

I only use PIAA, they last over a year and it's nice to see the water running up on it's own.

I've had the same PIAA Super Silicone blades for almost 4 years and they still clear the windshield like new. I have since bought a couple of sets of replacements so I should be set for quite some time.

I got mine from Autobarn, also, and the PIAA are VERY worth it. Excellent wipers, without the level of degradation I'd expect in comparison to many sets I've swapped over the years. SoCal sun wreaks havoc with blades, but these are fine.

I would like to know too. I have the OEM Acura inserts which are great in the rain, but the wiper system is almost useless in freezing weather. We had a mild snow storm yesterday and the wiper system was pathetic. I am shocked this system made it through Honda's testing.

They had a technical service bulletin on the wipers not removing snow etc., so it's not an isolated problem by any stretch.

Regarding the problem with snow: I live in area with no snow, but have trip up to Oregon this weekend with snow in forecast.
What is the issue with the snow and the wipers?

There is a TSB on this where the blades are tightened down so they give a good wipe, or at least that is what my dealer told me. Technically, I think it was not the blades, but the wiper assembly pressure, downforce, whatever, applied to the blades.

Thanks - I'll look to see if there is something obvious to adjust

Just found this TSB 07-009, but I am not sure that is what the dealer did, because there was no warranty claim paperwork associated with the work order.

Windshield Wiper Doesn’t Clean Snow or Slush From the Windshield
(Supersedes 07-009, dated February 16, 2007, to update the information marked by the black bar)

SYMPTOM
The driver’s side windshield wiper doesn’t properly
clean snow or slush off of the windshield.

PROBABLE CAUSE
There is insufficient wiper blade pressure against the
windshield.

CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the wiper linkage assembly and the driver’s
side windshield wiper arm and blade assembly.

PARTS INFORMATION
Wiper Arm and Blade Assembly: P/N 76640-SJA-G02
Wiper Linkage Assembly: P/N 76530-SJA-G01

WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION
In warranty: The normal warranty applies.
Operation Number: 740115
Flat Rate Time: 0.7 hour
Failed Part: P/N 76600-SJA-A01
Defect Code: 00503
Symptom Code: 06301
Template ID: 07-009A
Skill Level: Repair Technician

Out of warranty: Any repair performed after warranty
expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by
the District Parts and Service Manager or your Zone
Office. You must request consideration, and get a
decision, before starting work.

There was a lot more to this TSB on how to change the parts...but I did not include. You can pull the TSB off the site with Csmeance instructions on how to do so.

I live in cold, snowy Minnesota and have a 2005 RL that needs new wiper blades. Should I order 19" and 28" PIAA Super Silicone blades from Auto Barn? Will they fit on my car? Are they good for snow/ice/frost/rain conditions? Thanks!

doesn't the RL have a winter position for the wipers where you tug up on them?

It does, and the cool thing is it can be automatic!

Once in a heavy wet snow, they raised up to winter position automatically for me! Came back after the end of the day and I noticed the wipers were up!

Looked in the manual and it said:

A heavy build-up of snow or ice on
the wiper arms will cause them to
automatically park in the winter
position.

My 2G Legend did not do that. It and the 1G Legend were both manual winter positions.
