winter driving weather

I heard on the news the other day that every State in the Country except for Florida (49 out of 50) had snow on the ground somewhere. I guess all of us except Tampa get to have fun in our RL's

Mine is holding its own nicely, although we haven't gotten as much snow as most places.

My car drove on the blizzard covered roads yesterday and it was perfectly fine.

Just as a point of reference on what does not work in snow...

Traded my Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 PAX setup for 19 x 8.5 wheels and Yokohama Advan S4 Ultra High Performance All Season tires 255/40-19. These Yokos do not work well in the snow. Much better handling in the dry and wet than the Michelins, but in the snow, with even an inch or two, it is very easy to put the car sideways. The car is decidely less sure footed than with the OEM PAX tires.

Maybe its the wider 255 section, but I really think it is the tread pattern and compound. I am actually hoping for more snow in the Washington DC area so I can really test them out on some hills and so forth.

But with the last two events in December and January, I guess it is going to be something like the Pilot Sport A/S next time around...I want something that is far better in wet and dry than the PAX tires, but at least as good in light snow...

And I know everyone will chime in and say Conti ExtremeContact DWS, but a bad experience with previous generation Continental ExtremeContacts makes me leery...

Chas, I'm enjoying my DWS and as far as I'm concerned, there is no reason for snow tires in my climate. I drove in light snow and deep snow, it's all good.

As far as going sideways, it will happen if you go too fast, the car is just too heavy.

Yea, no. This is just making a 90 degree right turn from my driveway onto a narrow residential street. There is no going fast.

I have Michelin Pilot Sport A/S' on my car. While I won't get stuck, they ride can be a little "greasy" on the white stuff. I think it's mostly due to the tire compund. They have also gotten a little more noisy as the miles add up.

I live in Alberta, Canada, and we got 35 cm (That's a bit over a foot) of snow here so there were literally several feet of snow in some places and my RL was unfazed! SH-AWD is amazing! I have Toyo winter tires on it and can't get it stuck no matter how hard I try!

We had what I would say is our first "real" snowfall earlier this week, maybe 6 inches (15cm) of heavy wet stuff. I have four Winterforce snow tires (went narrower at 225) on the RL and it has no issues at all. I do find AWD feels "different" on slippery stuff compared to my previous experiences with FWD and RWD...the car sort of very subtly "shifts" underneath you or something as it gets traction at the various corners, hard to describe.

The biggest drawback is the low(ish) ground clearance under the front bumper - I don't bash headfirst into snowbanks the way I used to with my old Corolla LOL

I live in Connecticut and i think last wednesday we got close to 3 feet of snow or something crazy like that. I parked my car in my parking lot instead of on the street and when i went out to get my car out at first i tried to just bull dose my way through it and got a little ways out but it wasnt enough so i had to do a little shoveling. Eventually when i was almost out i got stuck in a spot where the snow was too high under my car and as i kept trying to go back and forth to get out the MID said "SH-AWD is over heating" the SH-AWD started flashing then the navi screen came up and said please put engine in idle mode and let car rest for a bit then wait for the SH-AWD light to stop blinking then try again..... first time i've ever seen that in 4 snow storms...... It was expected though because i turned off VSA and just kept trying to get out... once i shoveled a little area around my car to let my tires get some traction it was pretty easy to get out.... i was just trying to be lazy and play a little with my RL.... I hope i didnt damage anything.... Everything seems fine and besides that i havent had to worry much about the snow and my rear tires are pretty beat...

the last time I got stuck with snow packed under, I felt like after a few minutes of trying back n forth the engine got louder, so I would put it in idle for awhile.

I wonder if that's the middle stage before the mid yells at you...
