Will AC shutoff due to low freon - is this an easy fix?

took my car into dealer b/c AC was intermittently shutting off... it has done it quite a few times recently... mostly when I park the car to run into a store, come back out and restart it while warm... AC then won't blow cold air... park it, car cools off, next day it seems to work ok...

took it to acura and the tech said that my car is just low on freon and that it's cycling off... they want $189 to "service" the AC system.

is this somethign I could really do myself and is easy or could I mess up myAC by trying to add refrigerant?

i'm already into them for a $115 diagnostic fee..so I may jsut bite the bullet and have them fix it.. but don't want to get ripped off either.

thanks.

I'm not able to help you in diagnosing the issue, but shouldn't they apply the 115$ "diagnostic fee", which mind you seems to me like an Acura dealer's hourly rate, towards the final cost of your repair?

Yea if you already have to pay the $115 diagnostic fee, just pony up the extra $70 and have it taken care of at the dealer. Recharging the AC system anywhere is usually ~$60. I've tried it myself on other cars and it didnt help too much.

That's what I ended up doing. I just thought their explanation sounded weird... Maybe it was the way the tech explained it. They ended up giving me some kind of discount so I only ended up paying 170. Not bad. Ac seems to be working again.... Which is good since its HOT.

Thanks guys.
