Likely the dealer sold it at auction and made a claim on the dealership insurance for the inventory loss. Probably the dealership aslo put a claim on the test driver 's insurance.
It may not have been the cheapest way out, but if the dealer rebuilt the car, they have to pay the opverhead on keeping that unit on the books which cannot be sold as new. Second, many dealers would shy away from offering rebuilds if they feel that selling rebuilds lessens their reputation for new and used vehicles. Most higher end dealerships promote themselves as 'clean title' sales shops.
It may just have been wiser to cut the loss, get the vehicle out of sight and let someone else deal with it.
