sunroof rattle

Chas - quoting you from the glove box thread:

"I have a rattle (actually more like a rub) from around the sunroof. If I close the shade, the rattle is very muffled. I put some 303 aerospace protectant on the rubber gasket and it gets better for awhile."

you are right, my rattle is the sunroof. It only happens when car has been sitting in the sun and it is hot. Must be some metal component expands. Sound goes away after AC has kicked in a while.

My 2009 TL did the same thing. It was the plastic wind deflector.

No, its not loose. Just the rattle when hot. If I put upward pressure on the glass, the sound goes away. But, sound goes away as car cools down.

My 06 RL does this after it has been under the hot sun, in fact my 03 CL-S did and my prior 2 Accords.

It will go away for a while if you clean the rubber gasket and apply some vinyl dressing. BMW makes a product called Gummi Phledge (sp?) that lasts a bit longer. I had a new VW GTi that had doors that made the same noise and this is what the VW/BMW dealer had recommended.

I noticed some make of cars use felt gaskets around the sunroof. Perhaps Honda needs to look into a change........this annoyance started on my new 1988 Accord!

Good advice - thanks.
So its more of the gasket losing strength when hot versus metal expanding.

I think it is the gasket just getting dry and less pliant. There was actually a tech bulletin for the 2003 CL-S for this issue. My dealer had applied some very slick tape around the perimeter of the roof bead on the CL. It looked like a narrow band of scotch tape. It helped the noise a bit, but not completely.
I use Aerospace 303 Protectant (vinyl dressing) most of the time on my RL (I am out of the Gummi Phledge).
Honda does finally need to work with their sunroof vendor to prevent this on future models, twenty years of the same issue is very un-Honda like!

Interesting!

What exactly was loose? What would we look for, and do you just tighten it with a screw driver or some other hand tool?

Try using a silicone paste. I bought some of the Shin-Etsu (sp?) and it worked. My rattle (aka rubbing) disappeared.

where did you apply the paste? To the rubber gasket surrounding the sunroof?

Yea there is 4 allen key bolts that hold the glass roof in. be careful not to get the head liner dirty but if you stick your head up there you will see them. They can also algine your glass to the roof edge so in looks perrrfect.

By the way guys you should also do the doors after you have 20000 so they close perfect and lube the seals
