I have an 05 RL and it drives fine in automatic mode but it won't change to sport shift when I move gear shift over. Anyone have any knowledge in this area?

 

None specific to this car but my first thought would be that since the cup holders are right there, you may have remnants of spilled drinks (or just general crud) that has accumulated underneath and is blocking the pickup that detects you moving the lever over. I would pop the console panel off and take a look at the electronics under there. You can clean things up with electrical contact cleaner or isopropyl alcohol and see if that helps.

 

check your Transmission Range Switch, its common to fail and when it does fail it will prevent you from shifting to the next gear the gear indicator will flash. If that the case let go the gas pedal and try to shift into the next gear.
