Some Dynamat Questions

Has anyone here Dynamat his/her RL? How much difference does it make? I've seen it done on a TL... but have not seen it on RL yet... just wondering

I have it in my trunk b/c of my subs. It made a considerable difference for the rattles, and overall noise, heard from the outside of the car. I have always thought it sounds very cheap to hear the car rolling through the parking lot with their, in the words of Big Boi,
"Trunk rattllin like 2 midgets in the backseat wrasslin,
Speakerbox vibrate the tag
Make it sound like aluminum cans in a bag."

I lined nearly the entire trunk lid and the back of my plate and the rattles are significantly cut down. They aren't gone, but when it does rattle, you can tell that's because there is some major bass going on in there. The cabin does a great job of stopping the speakers in the car from reaching outside, and the Dynamat helps to kill the noise coming from the trunk.

Are you asking about the trunk or the doors/floorboards? Also, what noise are you trying to dampen?

I got 250 sq feet of Edead 80 and 250 sq feet of Edead V4 teklite ready to go in when i figure out what sub and processor im going to use. Ive used both products on previous cars and they are awesome. no smell, easy install, and works just as good if not better than dynamat, not to mention the money you will save $2 sq ft for each product.

Dynamat Extreme is $5.40 per sq foot. only .45 mil thickness
Edead 80 $2 sq ft .80 mil thickness

both are butyl rubber based

I was thinking about line the entire floor of the car... make it more quiet than the lexus or mercedes s... also, the 2011 RL have some special rims that'll cancel the road noise... just want to see how dynamat compare to that...

Hi Psheu, hope I'm not jumping in your back yard but this is something I always wanted to do. I never use this products on any of my previous vehicles but plan one day on putting some on my RL on doors and trunk if I decided to upgrade all the speakers of course. Post photos before and after like you always do.

Dynamat is a CLD, Constrained Layer Dampener, that is intended for taking resonance within panels and turning them into heat. In other words, dampening vibrations IN the panel. In order to kill the intensity of noise VOLUME, the best thing to use is a Mass Loaded Vinyl Barrier. This is the material that will actually block noise transmitted THROUGH the panel. The only catch to this material, is that for best results it cannot be applied directly to the panel; you need something between the two. Thus, for the best possible noise reduction, you should apply a CLD to the panel and a MLVB to the CLD.

See here for a great explaination of all of this.
http://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi

The only drawback to all of this is the weight. Neither CLDs or MLVBs are light. Adding both to the entire floor, and doors for superior quiet, will add quite a few lbs to the car. Lucky for us, we drive 4000 lb cars that will never be track worthy so the added weight is almost a negligible percentage.

One last note. Dynamat comes at a premium. If you are looking for NOISE reduction, go with a less expensive CLD and through some MLVB on top.

Good info in here.
Let me add this: I have Dynamat on the ceiling, doors and rear wall of my pickup, just to address road noise: noticeable improvement, particularly with wind noise over the roof. Easy to install, AFTER you get the panels off. Ha ha.

I really wanted to line the roof and C pillars, but didn't want to touch the liners. I would love to line the floor of the car too, but I imagine removing the carpet would be VERY labor intensive and costly. No? The trunk liner is a breeze, and I think the door panels would not be too much trouble.

speaking of weight gain, is it going to be like adding weight of another passenger (~150lbs) on the car constantly if the whole car is lined with this stuff?

I wonder how much it'll cost too..... hmmmmm

Check here for a comparo with some Dynamat stats. http://www.b-quiet.com/compare.html

Says the weight is .45lbs/ft^2. Also remember what I noted earlier about a Dynamat premium. It is unnecessary to buy Dynamat as there are equally affective CLD tiles on the market for much cheaper.

Another note, http://www.soundproofingcompany.com/products/mlv/ says their MLVB material is 1 lb/ft^2 for 1/8" and 2 lb/ft^2 for 1/4".
