Smell at high speeds

Hi All,

something has been happening recently in my RL. When I take it up to high speeds (has to get to 110 or 120) in remote areas of a rural state, it smells like overheated brakes or slipping clutch smell. As soon as I back it down below 100 the smell goes away - or is at least so faint as not to be smelled.

This happens every time the speed hits triple digits. I do have a propeller shaft bearing noise issue that needs to be rectified, but I'm not certain that this would be the issue...it appears to be coming through the vents in the car (windows not opened) so I'm thinking engine compartment.....thoughts?

Never go over 65 over the limit? I agree. 130 is too damn fast.

I'm going to try higher rpms in a lower gear for a bit...I think 3th gear at 6000 rpms will keep me at around 90 - ahem, kilometers per hour, ahem for you legal eagles out there, to see if I can reproduce....

I'm suspecting propeller shaft bearing since it's noisy but we'll see...

Maybe he lives in outside the US? Don't they have roads without speed limits in Canada?

There is dubious empirical evidence that speed limits are anything other than a form of superstition/population control, so I'll not get sanctimonious and suggest you check for partially-seized brake calipers. The usual Honda fault...push the pistons back in & grease the pads/shims/anti-chatter springs.

Also, check for oil leaks onto a hot exhaust. Possibly a good underside/engine bay washdown might eliminate the problem.

Change all the tranny fluids next.

Could then be your propshaft bearing, if all that fails.

I gave him the benefit of the doubt and said 65 over his assumed 65 max. The USDM RL is rev limited to 135 mph.

Is your point about car type or laws?

So, let me reshape the question.

In Deutsch Autobahns there is no speed limit and EUDM Legends are limited to 155 mph.
After 120 mph, it smells like a brake pad.

Any comments?

OK, so I had the car out today and ran it at 84mph in 3rd gear - roughly 5700 rpms for a good 5 miles. NO SMELL.

So it's not engine related. It's got to be some moving frictional part under higher stress. I'm still thinking propeller shaft. I just got a salvage yard one for $175 I'm putting in soon. The acura part, even at Tim's is about $1700 just for the part...yep, not a typo.

That should stop the noise I have....maybe not the smell :>)

When was the last time your fluids were replaced? The transfer case and differential are always at risk of overheating without proper equipment or fluids.

Ever road in Canada has a speed limit.
Our main highways are 100km/h (60mph)

You will not find a speedlimit sign over "100 km/h" here.

I think you are thinking of the middle east. UAE.

Montana used to not have speed limits on a lot of roads. Instead they had these.

Simply NOT true - they've got 110Km/h on almost all of Rt2 from Houlton ME into Nova Scotia.....

Fluids are replaced whenever the maintenance minder says so.

Maybe it was the smell of the cash in your wallet burning up to fill the gas tank at that speed.

I've got to imagine that the MPG at that speed with wind resistance bring it down to somewhere between 5 and 7 MPG. On an 18Gal tank, that's probably 100-110miles or so.

I've noticed that at about 80mph on cruise control, the RL gets about 25mpg. Going slower gains you no more than 1mpg. At 85 it goes down to 22mpg-23mpg and 90mph to 20mpg-21mpg.

Not to be antagonistic, but you should say "my RL". Every situation is different depending on the climate conditions, topography, and state of the car. I have averaged almost 29 mpg with 100% highway at an average 80 mph between Austin and Houston. YMMV.

Fair enough and I believe you - smooth easy non-hilly highway down there. I'm up in the Northeast. I'm sure ethanol ratios matter as well as other factors. My mileage gets worse during the winter months due to the cold. I've NEVER gotten better than 27MPG at any speed or season.

Btw, "official" fuel economy is 16/24 mpg so I guess we're both ahead of the game.
