Silence is golden!

Seen many times on here issues with "noises" in the console and dash area. Had a rather quiet car until I had the display for the nav unit replaced. At that point, I joined the crowd!

Even took it back a time or two but they could never seem to completely get the squeaks out. Seemed to be worse when it was hot so I made it through winter reasonably well. But, here we are again with hot weather! <g>

But the GOOD NEWS is that I had a couple days vacation coming and it had finally gotten the best of me. Took the console apart (not completely, but enough to "look around") - reseated a few things and it looked to me like the lip on the trim for around the shifter area had been installed in direct contact with the "not an ashtray". Did some moving of what would move and things got better BUT there was still the initial noise, even with the trim around the shifter off (the large black piece, not the silver that the shifter moves in).

The noise would be noticable on takeoff (squeek) and on braking (squawk). Just enough to drive me crazy. Running with the trim piece off I found that there are 2 "posts" on the front of the shifter trim itself (the piece the shifter actually moves in) and these posts stick up through some slots to locate them.

A little bit of white lithium lube later and I have a quiet car again!

This is a relatively easy fix so others might want to give it a try. Hardest part was getting the large black trim around the shifter off the first time...I used a "molding release tool" that seemed to work ok. Once you have that loose, you can either unhook the wires to the seat heaters and cigarette lighter (accessory socket, sorry) and drive it to verify your noise is coming from there or just hit the 2 posts with some lube and put it all back together.

I've heard this noise in some of the loaner RL's that I've had and wondered why they all seemed to do it. I'm guessing a friction fit when none is needed on these posts.

As always YMMV. <g>

I had the same issue where the silver and black trim pieces come together on the console. Same thing with a squeak when taking off. Put a little felt around it and it's gone.
