Don't be so quick to judge .. read the fine print.

For $11, you not only get installation, you also get them covered under the vehicle warrantee. Hmmm, wonder if that falls under the 50k bumper-to-bumper or 70k drivetrain warrantee. Either way, sounds like a deal to me.

Ask them to install them over the internet and provide a detailed DIY for the rest of us on AcuraZine

Buy them on eBay for $117 shipped and install them yourself. If you can't figure out how to install them, you bought the wrong car.

Nothing is free in life. The person has to get them from the Parts Dept, take them out of the package, put them in your car. $11 might seem trivial but if it does take time. It's only because you know about the mark-up. Most services in life you don't know about the mark-up.

Would you 'install' floormats in a total stranger's car for free?

I wonder if Lexus would charge you? IMO this is the sort of stuff that diminishes the luxury image or Acura.

I would laugh at a service manager if he came back and told me this was the reason for the labor cost.

Lexus would do it for free? Nothing is free in life. Here's the problem, if you want to know. Acura can set prices for any accessory they have but they cannot tell dealerships how much it will cost to install them because Acura does not own any dealerships. So when the customer shows up and wants the floormats somebody in service needs to say "I installed X, Y, and Z today" and, to account for their time, they have to bill a certain number of hours or fraction thereof. The spoiler might be 1.5 hours, the wheel locks might be 0.3 hours, etc. The floormats do take time, which is then billed. I don't know about Lexus and how much they charge but I'm pretty sure every dealership is pretty much the same.

You can dislike this, laugh at it... whatever. But that is the actual reason.

And nobody answered me... would any of you 'install' a total stranger's floormats for free?

Yes I would install this for free. It's the same reason why I have helped random ppl changing tires and jumping their car. Now, if I worked at a dealership, this is what I would call a "courtesy" service which I would not bill. I work in healthcare, we bill ALL our services based on minutes. It's probably more accountable then at a dealership as they have MUCH more discretion with prices, etc. then I do. Certain things we do for customer service and good will. This would be a good example.

Yeah, I understand your point. But if you didn't know there was an $11 mark-up nobody would care. C'est la vie.

Of course I would install for free for 2 reasons...#1 - It takes all of 30 seconds (factoring that out would be over $1300/hr labor) and #2 - The dealer is already making a profit on such an easily placed item. You think the dealership should charge to hang an Acura air freshener from the rearview mirror? Same concept. It actually takes them about the same time to just turn the key on and write down the mileage.

I understand but life isn't so simple. Every activity is billed from the guy who washes the car to the person who 'installs' your floormats. There's theory then there's practice.

True, but I don't get billed for the car washes. It's built into the overhead that factors into the labor rates right? Just charge a buck or two more for the mats. Not everyone will want them "installed" and you'll get compensated for the one or two people who opt for the installation.

Clearly this is much more involved that it appears. When my all weather floormats were installed the technician first had to remove the original carpeted floormats, then install the new ones. This took twice as long...almost a full minute. Then, he had to put the original mats in the trunk. Another ten seconds or so.

Luckily I wasn't charged for the labor. Kind of like buying wiper blades. They will install them for "free."

Last time I did it, I had to:

1. go to the parts department
2. wait in line
3. pray they had the right mats in stock
4. carry them to the car
5. put the car in ACC
6 & 7. power the seats backwards to make room for removing the front mats
8 & 9. put the front mats in the trunk
10. open the box
11 & 12. put in the front mats
13 & 14. motor the seats forward to get at the rear mats
15 & 16. put the rear mats in the trunk
17 & 18. put the rear mats in
19. power the passenger seat to a normal position
20. dispose of the box

Total of about 15 mins. It took me longer because it was my first time and I tried to so some of the actions out of order. I'd say if there was no line at parts and I was already at the dealership, I could get it done in 5 mins if I hurried.

I would never pay to have someone put my mats in. If they asked if i wanted them to put them in and it was a courtesy install i might agree to it, but never pay for it

The guys at the Toyota dealership installed the wiper refills for my dad's van (3, $10 total w/tax) at no charge...and that took a lot longer than installing floor mats.
