short ram intake for 06 RL?

not really mechanicly inclined but looking to do some cool simple mode possibly a intake and wondering what else everyone has done that's nice but fairly inexpensive. Any input is appreciated!

I installed a Takeda short ram air intake(it was built for a 3.5-3.7 liter Acura TL). But since it's the same engine we have and very similar engine layout under the hood, it fit just fine. I personally love the way it transformed the sound of the engine, plus an extra "10+" horsepower is always good.

the sound is definitely nice. But you gotta mention that he'd have to plug the sensor hole with something.

Plus in my personal opinion, the RL became much slower off the line, but I think it's faster at highway speeds. Possibly due to hot engine bay at stationary vs air flow when moving.

Disclaimer: Install and buy it on your own. Every mod comes with a risk. I am not responsible for anything. I am just sharing my thoughts and opinion on a mod I did on my own with my own money.

I am not trying to start an argument, I am trying to encourage people to use their own brain cells and decide for themselves if this is what they want. If you don't have anything to say that helps anyone on here...keep your comments to yourself!

Now that we got that out of the way..let's move on...

So, I received the intake last night and installed it.

I was surprised by how good the quality was on the intake and it even came with a cosmo racing sticker to put on intake, it's metal kind of sticker and one for your toolbox.
Anyways, jokes aside. Filter's quality is very good. I was expecting something cheap but it was a very nice filter. You could not tell it was cheap by looking at it. It came with all the parts and installation took 30 minutes because it was my first time under RL's hood.

Now for pics and video:

So what are the results of the butt-dyno? 037 always said he lost low-end torque, but probably gained high RPM hp. As a result, he felt slower off the line. How does it compare to stock (sound and power)?

Do you know the function of the tube connected to the back?

It looks kinked in the photos. Are you concerned about this?

I have seen that Autozone has all of the parts required to build this yourself for probably around the same price as you paid. I couldn't see how companies could justify charging $200+ for a pipe and filter. Nice find!

I purely did this for sound. Coming from S2000s and Preludes, it was too big of a change. I just wanted my daddy batmobile to have some sound. Heat soak would definitely kill me at lights but once the car gets going, you can't tell unless you floor it.

It's a work in progress, did this quickly last night in 30. Need to fix that pipe and cut it so it's not that long. It's temporary at this point just coz I am very impatient.

I am thinking of putting a cpu fan to push cold air from the pipe that's coming from the bumper that was feeding air to stock intake to try and keep it cool. I know people who get awesome mpg just coz of those cpu fans. I am planning on painting the front grill too but like I said..it's a work in progress...maybe I should make my own thread and not jack this one

Thank you though, I will fix it up and post better pics once I finish everything

Looks good! I know you did it for the sound, but do you feel any difference (as little as it may seem)? Also, I'd love to learn more about this CPU fan mod.

Here is an example of one but I don't have any pics. I've seen several S2000s with pipe like that capturing cold air from in front of bumper or by cutting out the fog light holes.
They even put fans on that box to pull extra air into that box. I will have to find some better pics.

Here is another video I made while on lunch

Edit:
On any gains/loss part:
Not trying to sound like a douch* but I put my S on dyno testing different intakes. Stock made the most power to the wheels. The loud ones feel like you are going faster but they made less power on dyno. It's a proven fact with a lot of cars. I am sorry, I don't go by butt dyno but with facts. Yes, sounds like I am going fast but I am probably slower

how about getting a big enough hose to cover the whole filter? that will keep the heat away and improve suction.

Did I just say something crazy or does that seem practical?

CAI has the filter going way down where it has a chance to drink water, if you place the filter way up the line and just extend a hose down you're not as likely to suck the water, me thinks.

In order to suck water in engine, the whole filter has to be in water. In this case, the filter is not going under water till your whole car is under water.
So in simple words, people but that bypass valve in CAIs just to be safe.

IIRC, you get a 1% increase in HP for every 11 degrees F drop in charge air temp, so the cooler the air that gets to the Throttle Body the better off you are.

For example...outside air temp is 80F, underhood temp 140...that would ~5% increase in HP if you had a CAI.

i would love to see where you came up with that figure at.

Not to mention Honda's IAT sensor is so damn slow. sensor reads every 8-12 seconds. so most of the time that you are getting on it the car doesn't even notice the difference in the intake temps

My mileage after the intake has gone down from 23-28MPG to 19-22MPG.

Just because I can't stay off the gas. Every time I floor the pedal it feels like I have unleashed a monster! Loving the sound. Exactly what I needed to fall in love with the car again. When it gets old, I'll have to drop some $$ in suspension

my mileage actually went up since I became more aware of when the engine is racing, at least when I'm not trying to scare people

More power to ya man. I can't stay off the gas. Driving in Dallas is brutal sometimes so I have to vtec people and when I do I have to make sure they hear me rawr and realize they are being stupid.

Actually, it might be 10 degrees, but I didn't come up with it, I read it in R&T many years ago.

Never had vapor-lock with my CAI setup in the past. Of course, I wouldn't drive through gigantic puddles but running the car through a car wash or heavy rain was never an issue. I also did not install the bypass valve.

What changed about the sound? Does it growl or sound like you're leaving a Japanese restaurant all the time?

Wow... I like it. I guess I heard some other youtube clips where guys had removed stuff in addition to the resonator which made their cars sound like a really fast popping sound. Like the cars with the big mufflers.
So, does the 2nd gen RL with the 3.5 sound like those clips also?
Is the acceleration off the line really noticeably worse with the short ram intake?
Thanks in advance, you have my attention now.

Just bought the short ram kit from the outfit linked above.
How fast was the shipping?

Can't wait.

you can mount the same intake on a 3.5 if you cover the sensor hole on the side, should sound close enough.

As far as off the line, I feel like at least a second is lost to 60. Then again, after it gets going it's hard to tell, I've p0wned a Mustang GT on the highway...twice.

I mean...if you get SRI don't get it for the hp, get it for the sound. You can easily save money on gas as the sound alerts you when you're having too much fun and if it wasn't on purpose you can scale back.

I really miss the rawr of the RL now that I'm driving a stock car again. Want someone out of your way? shift down and RAWR! instead...I just silently pull away without expressing my frustration in any meaningful way.

With the intake people JUMP out of the way, which is like respect

Sounds good. I understand you do it for the sound, but I also bought the rl because it's has a bit of power. Just don't want to lose too much of that.

The growl isn't obnoxious, is it?

the growl is not audible at 2k, slightly audible at 3k and at 5500 people are jumping out the way

It sounds like stock till around 2K RPMs and then it sounds little bit like some muscle car in the background and then when you go over 5K...it's heavenly. It's not bad at all, I love it. Power you lose is not noticeable unless you are trying to floor it from a stop. It is a heavy car and SRI is soaking in hot air when you stop. If you are worried about that, get a CAI.

SRI is a safe way to get decent sound from engine bay and not risk anything. You might lose a couple hp but you don't notice it if you drive normal.

I know people can live all their life in any weather with CAI but if it's meant to happen it will happen. I have had CAIs too and never had issues in Texas rain and all. You don't get problems till the whole filter on CAI is under water even then the car stops and can be recovered if you don't try to start it again.

Anyways, this thread is for SRI...let's stay on topic.
I ordered it on a Friday afternoon and it was on my door next Thursday..so less than a week.

Just installed it. What hole was I supposed to plug up? Sounds good, does yours have a metallic sucking sound at low rpm's? The kit came with an extra hose I didn't know what to do with. Thanks!

Just installed this intake tonight. This is my 33rd car in my 31 years, most of which I have had some kind of intake on. In all those years and all those cars I have NEVER heard a more impressive sound from an $80 mod. I couldn't care less what it does for my power, MPG or anything else for that matter now, THAT SOUND. OMFG. I just went down a isolated back road and there are double guard rails on a stretch long enough to wind out 1st and hit a bit of 2nd. I say again, OMFG.

It goes without saying....if you have $80 and 30min DO THIS!!

I noticed most of the videos are removed, I will post one shortly.

Todd

There is a power difference between the two. The sound is probably the same between the two, though, because in either case, you are removing the stock sound deadeners that keep you from hearing the added intake sound.

Cold air intake takes in cooler air from outside the engine compartment. AEM makes such that fits RLs.

A short ram intake is a short intake that takes in the much warmer air from the engine compartment.

If you desire the small amount of performance an intake offers, I do not recommend a short ram intake. This is because cooler (more compressed) air has the potential to add power, usually a small amount.

Warm air such as that taken in by a short ram intake can rob you of power. If you desire the sound that an intake offers and don't care that it could rob performance, then go for the short ram.

thanks! yea i know what you mean about the cold air/hot air. i was just wondering if there was a sound difference under vtec. when i had my focus the cold air had a nastier high pitch noise in the last 1k rpm before redline that i didn't get when i ran a short ram. i never tested that on my civic si with vtec. thanks for your feedback i appreciate it!
