RL Dyno

I was finally able to book a dyno session in 2 weeks. I'll post the results when I have it. Maybe I'll be able to get some good runs and see how the motor is performing.

If possible, can you post the HP/Tq graphs per wheel under WOT? I'm curious as to see how much power gets distributed and how much power is lost through the slushomatic tranny and AWD.

I don't know if it's possible, but I'll try.

Just did a couple of 3rd gear pulls yesterday. Check out how smooth the torque curve is. I was very impressed. Check it out.

While the graph certainly looks good, the numbers look a little off...

Do you have the rest of the data?

I'd love to see the hp/tq curves overlapped with data points. (Max HP, Max TQ, etc.)

I think the numbers are accurate given the dyno and the 3rd gear pull. It's a little low but the shape is consistent.

Here's the scan.

Very clean run, but far lower than expected/hoped for.

Thanks for taking the time to do this.

I wonder what simple modifications like intake and exhaust will do for this engine . . .

It's about a 40% parasytic loss from the claim 300 bhp at the crank. I think it's pretty consistent with it being automatic and AWD.

What impresses me is how flat the torque curve is. No wonder it pulls so smoothly.

Yes, it's flat but it starts at 3700 rpm! What are the torque figures below that?

Wow! What a contrast!
A RWD manual Corvette has around 15% and auto is 20%.

Strangely similar to the TSX dyno:

I'm also a bit concerned about the torque coming in around 3.5K. My current car (2000 Audi S4) has only 250 HP but the torque comes in early so it pulls really nicely with the automatic without ever going over 3K. Then when you step on it you feel the intake change at 4K and it really screams :-)

Anyway, low end torque makes for a very drivable car which is of course why V8s are so popular. I hope to test an RL soon to see how it feels in real life.

Was this on a AWD dyno?

Those numbers just seem way too low. Even with AWD and an auto tranny, 40% loss seems ridiculously high.

My thougts also. My stopwatch says 0 to 60 in about 6.8 sec. I don't think 190 HP at the wheels is going to get that done.

It must be low. The RL is carrying 700lbs more than the TSX yet it's about 0.5 sec quicker to 60. If they dyno the same, something doesn't add up. SH-AWD is good but I don't think it can overcome a 700lb weight penalty.

I think this dyno is low by about 20%.

The dyno seems inaccurate. RL should have at least 240 hp to the wheels.

I'm not a dyno expert, but from what I remember when I had my previous car (1996 Mustang Cobra) dyno'ed, the dyno run should be executed in 4th gear, which should be close to a 1:1 ratio.

The 1:1 ratio tends to be the most efficient, and so will generate the best numbers from the dyno run. Running in 3rd is less efficient and will (most of the time) always produce lower numbers because the inefficiency of the gearing robs the wheels of power. Since everyone is after the maximum numbers, it is recommended that you always run in 4th gear.

In this case, the run was made in 3rd, which would probably explain a higher than expected loss from flywheel to the wheels.

g6civcx, what was the reason given to you running in 3rd? Do you think that they will let you repeat the run in 4th, given the above argument, to see how it might change the numbers?

Pete

3rd gear is probably right gear to dyno this car.

Gear Ratio's below.

1st
2.697

2nd
1.573

3rd
1.071

4th
0.694

5th
0.481

g6civcx, are the wheels/tires stock?

The more I stare at the numbers, the more I'm boggled.

They just don't jive.

If all I need is that amount of power to get the acceleration that the RL has then meh, no need to ever get a car with more.

I have no clue about dyno testing and stuff but I'd prolly agree with Dan that something is wrong if the TSX gives about the same readings yet the RL is quicker while being heavier.

I'm still interested in the answer to the dyno type. I was wondering how one dyno's an AWD car.

This was done at 2pm in August heat at Extreme Motorsports' DynoJet AWD dyno:

I think you can fool with the adjustments and it will affect the correction factors. I am really just interested in the shape of the torque curve. It looks fine to me so I am very satisfied with the dyno run. Very clean and the shop was very professional/helpful.

Hmm.
Dyno on front wheels with the shawd 70/30 split? That would account for the "40%" loss - its at the back wheels ;-) Heh.

I don't even know what that means. The OP has already responded that it was done on an AWD dyno - presumably that means 2 rollers each transmitting data.
