Remote gone batty!

My wife mentioned the a few days ago that she was standing outside the car talking to someone and the locks kept clicking. I suggested that something was pressing on the remote in her handbag.

Well, I got out of the car yesterday and locked the doors with the remote and whoa!, the locks went nuts. I looked at the remote (lying flat in my hand) the the transmit light kept going off. Locking again seemed to calm things.

Anyone seen this behaviour? It has been quite cold (-10C) the last week or so.

Do you have another fob to compare it to? It should only blink when you press a button or you go to open either door or trunk from the outside. Also make sure the vehicle battery is good.

Yes they receive signals from the antennas while inside and outside the car.

Both times was the same fob? Your fob is probably dirty and something is sticking. Open the fob, remove the battery, and use a toothbrush with Isopropyl Alcohol to clean the buttons and all contacts.

The alcohol is evaporate on its own. If you want to speed the process up, hit it with some compressed air or a blow dryer. Then, put it all back together.

Exactly what I was going to suggest. I've seen quite a few customers unnecessarily waste money on a new remote.

@ the dealers right now. I guess my "remote gone batty" might be a Freudian slip.

You went to a dealer to change your battery?

Seriously, don't let them sell you anything but a battery. https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-rl-2005-2012-76/i-005-signs-dying-battery-863206/

After 3hrs at the dealer: A low voltage signal seems to have triggered a whole bunch of error and warning codes. The battery is still 517cca and they only recommend changing if less than 480ish. So just the cost for the diagnostics today. Will see if this clears up the "hands-free" remote issues. Thx for your input.

Did they do a load test?

I suspect battery is on its way out. Does your steering wheel telescope out when you start the car?

Memory settings are still functioning. Now getting "Check SHAWD" warning! I guess the -5F weather is too much for the RL...

Cold weather wreaks havoc on a battery. If you drove the car to the dealer and they just did a quick battery test, it might have passed as it was charging as you drove it in. Did the dealer clear all the codes before you left? Is the CHECK SH-AWD light on the MID after you picked it up or is it just a history message that keeps popping up on the navi screen? What is the code?

YOUR BATTERY IS DYING. DRIVE TO O'REILLY AND BUY A NEW ONE.

We aren't

Might be easier to give sequence of events

1. Wife mentions phantom locking/unlocking
2. Get same behaviour with my remote
3. New year day when shifting into reverse get slew of warning lights with check emission system staying on
4. Yesterday dealer after being on road for 30min. Battery test, clear warnings
5. This morning check awd and vsa warnings. -25C. Start at first crank. Drive 30min to gas station. Awd and vsa warnings clear. Drive another 30min. Shift into reverse and get the whole slew of warnings again with chk emissions staying on. Gking to dealer this aft.

Curious that both times the warnings came on reverse?

Thx again for all feedback. Should mention that this is an 05 with 215k km

We really don't know how else to help you. Everything stated points to a dying battery as has been documented here for the past seven years. If you want to spend some money, donate to a charity, but really, you need a new battery. Trying to debug anything else before that is foolish. I don't mean to be rash, but it really is that simple.

I hope your issues resolve. Good luck.

FWIW, my 06RL starts throwing fits with the door locks acting up whenever there is any accumulation of road salt spray on it in the winter months. The car will start locking and unlocking itself just when you are standing near it with the fob, the doors won't reliably lock or unlock when touching the handles, etc, occasionally I will get sudden "keyless remote not detected" messages after driving the car for a few minutes, etc. Trip to the car wash and all is well again until more salt spray accumulates

For now dlr says a transmission sensor code P1717 is popping up and thinks cold weather might be cause. Told to watch as the weather gets warmer. Okay to drive.

Haha, I would recommend you take it elsewhere. Cold weather will not cause the car to set codes. That code is for an open in the transmission range switch which would explain why you are getting the messages after shifting into reverse. This dealer doesn't appear to be troubleshooting anything.

If that's the code for the transmission range switch and you have a 2005 or 2006, there's a TSB for the door locks acting crazy - mine did this on the day I took ownership of the car. Dealership stood behind it and replaced fuse panel and the range switch.

You can find the TSB PDF here: http://d.pr/f/aBSr, but as stated, I'd bring it somewhere else if the dealer can't troubleshoot this.

hahah, this made me laugh... but its probably true.

On a side note you have to admit that it was brilliant on Acura's part to create a scenario that is easily solved but if you over think it could cost you $$$ in chasing errors.

007 - What did you think of the post by Blunosr about the salt spray? Seems like battery, but that salt info is new news to me

I know you are talking to 007, but that is the same scenario that smoked my handles.

Salt, car wash, detail, anything that can get in and short the handle when the fob is close.

What's odd with my 06 is the door handles seem to work BEST after a wash. They don't seem to have any issues with getting wet so long as its a "clean wet", it's just dirt/roadspray - and especially road salt - that seems to mess things up. I have had problems after driving in the rain in the summer - once again, a wash and all is well.

Also, my RL handles almost never work properly if I am holding my iPhone in my hand, or if it is in the same pocket - or near - the fob. Typically they will lock OK with a touch of the handle "nubby", but will refuse to unlock unless I put the phone in another pocket.

This is an educated guess. The salt is collecting in the handle contacts causing the wacky behavior. This is fixed when the salt is washed out with clean water as mentioned.

I have a similar problem but can't start my own thread cause I'm new here. I woke up one morning and went out to the car. The key fob didn't work. So I used the key to get in and start it. The alarm went crazy! The door locks and windows didn't work now either. I thought the batteries in the fob were dying so I bought new ones and put them in. Still the same problem. I also noticed that my fuel and temp gauges are all screwed up and criss crossed each other. Any ideas? Oh and i found out if you remove the horn fuse under the hood the car won't shift out of park.

Check fuse 7 and fuse 10. If they are good then the handle is bad.
