painting the caliper
I stopped by a powder coating place today to get an estimate. I decided not to do it because the guy said he would have to sandblast the whole thing and paint over the letters. I want to leave the letters unpainted. Anyone know a good place in the bay area to get them painted at? Otherwise i might just do it myself.

Why not try it yourself first? You don't really have anything to lose. If you don't like it you can always take it to a professional later. I'm going to be painting mine this weekend. Already have the kit.

I've actually had the kit for a few months. Just haven't had the time to do it. Figured since I'm replacing the pads and rotors this weekend I should probably do this while I'm at it.
My friend owns a paint shop and although they don't do brake calipers, he said he would help me out
Which pads and rotors did you go with? I just bought Akebono pads and Rotora slotted rotors for my front.

Its not hard to do at all. I was really worried when I tried it on my old benz but they came out awesome (I went with a bright red so everything showed). Just make sure you prep and tape them perfect as that is the most important. Other than that just brush on if its epoxy based as it will dry smooth and even. If you want to get them show quality you can even wet sand.
I bought Akebono pads and Centric rotors BTW.
Are the lights (low beams and fog lights) in your avatar stock? I like the look. I might actually switch back to stock.
Thanks. They are stock in that picture. The fog lights are 6000K HID's now though. Don't let the picture fool you. It was taken by a professional photographer with a good eye for a nice picture.
Did anybody sand the texture off their calipers before painting? I started to sand the texture off on one of the rear calipers and it seems like a daunting task. I got gloss black so I'm thinking it will have a better appearance if the surface is sanded smooth first...
Finally got around to painting my calipers today. I used gloss black G2 caliper paint. I'm mostly happy with the results. I don't know what people are using to mask off the letters but it's a pain in the ass. First I couldn't get the painters tape to cut cleanly around the letters. I ended up using some contact paper my wife had lying around. Unfortunately the black paint still bled onto the letters a little bit. The paint also left a little bit of a lip around the letters. I just ended up doing what some others did and finished them off by painting the bolts and letters silver. For that I used some bright silver Duplicolor touch-up paint. They look perfect from a feet back and once the wheels are on I'm sure nobody will notice the flaws.
BDogg - looks good. I just received my paint kit from G2 today and thinking about painting this weekend. A couple of questions:
1. Did you paint the rear calipers too?
2. If so, was there enough paint for all four calipers?
3. Also, did you take off all wheels so the epoxy wouldn't set up? I don't have a feel how quickly it dries.
4. Why didn't the painters tape work? I had planned to use that green painters tape. Supposed to be better than the blue tape.
5. Finally silly question - do you have a torque wrench (and what is the spec) when torquing the lug nuts back on?
Appreciate your feedback.
Thanks.

1. Did you paint the rear calipers too?
Yes.
2. If so, was there enough paint for all four calipers?
Plenty. I had paint left over.
3. Also, did you take off all wheels so the epoxy wouldn't set up? I don't have a feel how quickly it dries.
I did take off all of the wheels. I have 4 jack stands. The paint dries quickly. I did one coat all the way around and then went back and did another coat.

I was having problems getting the painters tape to cut out around the edges of the letters. It kept pulling off the letters while I was trying to cut it. The contact paper I used is much stiffer and easier to cut with an exacto knife. I would try the painters tape first though and see if you can get better results.
5. Finally silly question - do you have a torque wrench (and what is the spec) when torquing the lug nuts back on?
Yes. Torque specs are 95 ft/lbs.
