Ok, finally got around to replacing front pads with Akebono ProAct. I changed brake fluid as well-ran about a quart through all 4 bleeders. Took car for a test drive- taking it up to 40, and gently braking to about 20. Did that about 10 times. Then I took it up to 75 and brought it down to 20 harder than I normally would. Front brakes got extremely hot, and were a little smelly. Anybody else have that experience with new akebonos? Replacement was very smooth, and all eight pistons were quite smooth in their bore. Is this a normal thing for akebono pad break-in?

I personally do it almost everytime. (this is on all my cars and not RL specific)

If the rotors are perfectly straight though you can just get away with scufffing them up a bit to get the glaze off. It'll help break them in.

Plus it only costs about 20 each give or take.

I'm at 50k and just ordered the OEM pads to replace the fronts. Rotors still look good and I dont have any vibration issues at the moment so I am just going to put the new pads on and leave the rotors alone. Next time I do the pads I'll replace the rotors as a matter of course. I've never had good luck resurfacing rotors. Seems I always ended up with shakes by 5k miles later on. Supposedly removing some rotor material during the lathe returning makes them thinner and more prone to problems. Not sure if this is true or not but, and in any event, I wont be turning mine. Braking the glaze with Garnet Paper is a good idea but I can never find that near me.

I just replaced my front pads as well with the Akebono ProACT and replaced front rotors with Powerslot slotted. Still feels a little rough. I guess the slots are some of what I'm feeling.

I'm still waiting on the rear slotted rotors from Autoanything.com.

As one smart fella posted above, the RL brakes are produced by Advics, although that company isn't American: it's Japanese and closely related to Toyota's conglomerate. The RL prototype had Brembos in the photos, but the big monster, 4 pot brakes in our cars are Advics. Advics has a great reputation, but not much for a logo... If you search in our forums, you'll find photos and details on the maker of our calipers.

That said, I appreciate the posters that give reviews on their aftermarket brake pads! Best way to find out is from another RL owner.

The Powerslot are great. I had them on my last Acura and plan to put them on my RL next time I change the front pads. It takes a little getting used to the slots but they'll mellow down on the pads shortly.

Mine did that but went away after the next trip. Almost all of my new pads on all my cars smell for the first few stops....must be burning off oils and such from making the pads.
I have been running these pads for about 8k now and have no complaints.

I have about 500 miles on them now, and they are great! they bite every bit as good as the oems!

And right you are.

Just got rotors resurfaced, brake fluid changed and new Akebono ceramic pads on the front at an independent shop, $240 out the door--less than half the dealer's quote. So far, the Akebonos are very quiet and have businesslike stopping power.

Chas, the front brakes are brembo's. The dealer told me so, and when he guy who owns a TL-S took em apart said they're exactly like the brakes on his car except with bigger pads.

I am running Satisfied GranSport 6 front pads and stoptech cross cut rotors right now, I don't feel any stopping difference in regular driving, I do feel like I have less stoppin power when the brakes are cold.

some pads don't work to well in cold temperatures. I have a set of KVR pads on My Accord and when I use to live up north on 40 degree days or so it would take a couple of stopping cycles for them to perform normally.


the dealer gave you wrong information. These are in fact advics and not Brembos.





Brembos always have Brembo and their symbol on all their calipers.

we took em apart two weeks ago, didn't have an Advics label on them, cannot confirm seeing a brembo symbol either.

Got more pics? those don't look like the one's we were taking apart.

the last 2 photos look exactly like what I got I never bothered to look behind them to see if it says advics or not...hmm

Jeez that's a huge piece. Looks a lot bigger when it's not on the car.

How long are the brakes supposed to last? My 06 has 52,500 miles on it and after being on this thread, I had the dealership check the condition on my pads and they said I had plenty of wear of left. I got almost 70k miles out of the stock pads on my Infiniti FX. Will I get about the same out of these? I [usually] drive it like Aunt Mildred.

Yeah it depends on how you drive. If theyre fine now then yeah wou'll probably get some good milage out of them.

Bringing up an old thread, but my brakes are almost gone and I need some replacement pads. Any follow up after a year+ of use?

Do yourself a favor, go with the EBC Red Stuff pads. You can find them for about $75, plus shipping.
