oem pad life
How long do the front pads last? I have 40 k mi on them and they are making some noise in the morning when I first start out backing up. Have not looked at them yet.

I recall RL owners reporting 80K+ before replacing pads. As mentioned, driving habits will affect longevity. I just hit 30K on my RL and I am very impressed with how smooth, vibration free and true my brakes are still. I am also very impressed how little brake dust is generated by them.
My RL also has a slight squeal in the morning when pulling out of the garage, afterwards, they are silent. I too expect it is a result of scrubbing off rotor rust / contamination after sitting overnight. I have had them inspected on my last service visit and nothing was of concern.

I do drive primarily highway miles.
I have to agree with Tampa, I am impressed by the performance of the brakes on the RL. This after my previous car was an '01 TL. They were notorius for warped rotors. They replaced the pads and resurfaced my rotors at least three times under warranty in the 90K miles I drove that car.
As for noise, I'm also in the same boat as Tampa. When I first step on the brakes after the car has been sitting (overnight or all day at work), I will hear a slight squeal, but it doesn't last.

I am at 96k now on my original pads all the way around. Mine is a 2006 RL. I do a lot of highway, but also a lot of rough traffic around the DC Beltway.
This will be a record for me. My 2003 Acura CL-S needed front pads at 60k.

Three Wheelin'
I just replaced my front brakes and rotors at 57k miles. I have a 50 mile round trip commute every day but its almost always in traffic so I would say I apply my brakes at least 60% more than the typical highway drive. When I pulled everything apart I found I had possibly 10k left on the pads until the warning tabs but decided to just do them anyway since I already had the parts waiting around. I used OEM pads and Stoptech rotors. I havent checked my rears yet but assume I could have maybe 20k left on them given the status of the fronts.

I called the dealer about the TSB and they will only cover part of the cost for the TSB since I have an 06 and the car is out of warranty. Keep that in mind if you are out of warranty, but it doesn't hurt to ask.
