Not the usual "Not an ashtray" problem
Not the usual "Not an ashtray" problem
The usual problem is that the lid won't close. My problem is that it won't open.
I stuffed a packet of facial tissues in there (which I've gotten away with before). This time, although the lid will go down a quarter-inch or so, it's not releasing and opening.
I don't want to use force and break it. Suggestions?

007, I knew if anybody was brave enough to give this one a try, it would be you.
I've tried, but hey, I have nothing to lose by trying again -- it won't be good for much if I can't open it!
C'mon, Heavy, I'm counting on you too. Don't you even have something smart-assed to add here?

Update: I now have the more usual problem.
Still couldn't get it open. Finally levered the back end of the lid toward the front end of the car, and presto! It opened, and... you guessed it, now it won't close.
Guess I'll be investing five dollars. :.)

All-righty, then!
Followed your advice, and followed in the footsteps of my illustrious fellow Are-Ellers, by ordering the part from OEMAcuraParts.com.
Just to put the part number in another thread so it's easier for others to find, the latch is Part #77297-SJA-003. Four bucks for the part, eleven more to ship it. (This thing is the size of a postage stamp. Really, UPS? Aaargghh.)
The adventure continues!

Yep, unfortunately. In today's day and age with people claiming non-receipt of parts or things not getting delivered, all orders have to be sent with tracking confirmation and insurance, no matter what it is.
Most websites are similar, I order a lot of stuff personally from Allied Electronics....high voltage capacitors and special resistors mostly. I deal with the same thing. I just wait to order until I have enough stuff in my cart to make it worthwhile.
My suggestion would be to add other items to the order that you may need, which really won't change the shipping costs at all.

Yep, mine did the same.
First it would not open. After fiddling and persuasive swearing it opened. Then it would not close.
I remember ordering the part from OEM parts. The shipping cost was more than the part, but still less than my dealer.

Now, on to installing it!
All done. Five-minute job.
The key was the advice on this board to, after removing the felt liner and the two phillips head screws, grab the front edge of the shifter surround panel (with the shifter in neutral) and firmly pull straight up on it until it popped loose so there was space to remove the whole storage bin for replacement of the hinge.
If it weren't for this board, I wouldn't have had the confidence to tamper with a trim piece like that for fear of breaking it and creating a bigger problem than my original one. Thank you, gentlemen!

007, funny you should say that. I glanced at the package after posting that, and in fact it WAS Priority Mail. What I think Tim was saying was that the tracking confirmation and insurance pumped up the price -- what I meant was basic shipping without the extras.
That's strange. I get 9 oz jars of food thickener for my daughter from FL using priority mail. Typically takes two days, tracking and $50 insurance included, and costs $6.
Priority mail starts at $2 IIRC.

He might come out of his room by August.
