Night Vision

I was venturing in the MDX forum and came across a video of them installing night vision on the MDX. I am fully aware that the Honda Legend comes with night vision. Do you think it is possible to install it on our cars? Also how much would it cost?(roughly)

You would have to source it straight from Japan. You woud need the pop up screen, hardware, the two camras/sensor, all the wiring, etc. I would expect to be at least a $2000 to get all the parts shipped to North America.

I think that the cheapest night vision option is to add driving lights across the hood as in WRC! Night into day at the flick of a switch.

There were articles on this system in the worldwide version of Honda news and some other articles written on this back in 2005 or so when it was introduced.

These tended to explain the difference between near and far infrared systems and the advantages/disadvantages of each, and of course the advantages of the Honda system. Principal among the advances was the image recognition software Honda bundled with it.

The Night Vision HUD popped up behind the center speaker grill on the front dash.

There was some talk of the system not working in certain ambient temperatures because of the difficulty in distinguishing living objects when the ambient was near body temps.

I think this was a wildly expensive option also.

Google this site and the web.

It poped up from from the dash directly behind the speedo cluster. There is a video of it on the honda jdm website, I think they call it HDTV. Here is the link to the press release. http://world.honda.com/news/2004/4040824_01.html

Here is the Honda Video showing the night vision in use.http://world.honda.com/HDTV/Intellig...Vision/200408/

Hard to believe this system was fielded for purchase in 2004!

And you are right, it is in the driver position, above the speedo. It has been a while.

I would definitely pay a few thousand dollars for an OEM retrofit kit.

this needs claification, there are 2 systems:

1. The system that just shows an image ahead.
2. The advanced system that shows the image ahead and identifies animals, humans and other objects, and then alerts the driver.

The Honda legend uses #2. The MDX in that thread used #1. I will warn you that the camera's are ungodly expensive. FLIR, the manufacturer for the night-vision camera used for that MDX and all 7 series's BMW's charges around 5000 dollars for each camera. The camera has a simple video output that can be connected to the navi screen via a navi converter.

I think I would like the OEM pop up screen retrofitted, but just a normal night-vision display on it (not the advanced "intelligent" system). Any ideas on how to do this? A source to order OEM parts would probably be a good start.

There are plenty of very good automotive NV cameras out there for well under $1000. How about hooking one up to the navigation screen? Or, even better, finding one of the OEM NV screens, installing it and hooking one of the more affordable NV cameras up to it?
