My Acura RL Quarter Mile

My Acura RL Quarter Mile
Today my first time racing my RL. Silly I know because it not even meant for speed.
Did ok, on my best run I got...
R/T .236
60' 2.291
330 6.550
1/8 10.009
MPH 70.69
1000 13.000
1/4 15.505
MPH 90.79
Everything was stock on my car, I took out any weight that I could, had about a 1/4 tank of gas.
Had no idea what to expect from the times, but it sure was a lot of fun.

I honestly don't know what mods I want to do with my car, I know it's the same engine as the TL-S so I'm sure the parts are there, at the same time. I'm also trying to save for the Focus RS....
I might just get some really good brakes for the car. I might even add a racing stripe for an extra 5 facepalms... Who knows.
Really this is all about having fun for me while improving my times as best as I can without throwing a supercharger in this car.
Also, Never heard of a throttle reset procedure, is that even going to improve anything?

Back in the 1960's My buddy and I took his 1966 GTO convertible with the 389 cu in and 3 two barrel carbs and a 4 speed trans to the track and turned 15.5 seconds at 90MPH in the quarter mile. Two things factored in which were, a convertable is heavier than a coupe and he did not know how to shift very good.

alot of the power is lost in the automatic transmission, Ive raced my previous vehicle which was a 2010 Accord coupe 6MT vs my wives RL in the dry and it didnt do terrible seeing as to the accord had 271hp, and the RL in the almost 300 range, in the dry the accord was about 4-5 cars ahead, in the wet when I couldnt grab traction between gears the cars were dead even the whole time, and that accord has done 13.7 at the track

I have never heard of AT causing significant loss. Do you have any real data to support that?
The RL (and other AWD cars) loses a lot of power through the AWD drivetrain. You can expect 15-20% loss from the fly wheel in a FWD and 25-30% in an AWD. The transfer case, drive shaft, and rear differential add a lot of weight as well even with the driveshaft being carbon fiber.
I too would be most interested in what HFPC (or deletes), J-pipe, and HFC (or deletes) could do for the RL. Also, go turbo before you go supercharger.

vtec loves the top end.
the quarter mile ends just before our engines really wake up.
without going F/I and or nitrous, it'd be very hard to get to 13.9 seconds.
the TL has a hard time reaching 13.9 sec.
and we're lighter and have less drivetrain losses.

Honest questions 'cause I don't race too often (read: ever), but shouldn't you be rounding out the 1/4 in 3rd gear? If those gains are found in the VTEC range, why wouldn't you realize them in the top of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd? I would think if you were really pushing the car to its limit, you would never see an RPM below 4-5k besides off the line.

I can't tell if that is an answer to my question or not. Are you insinuating that ratios above 1:1 do not benefit from added power in the VTEC range like ratios below 1:1? Do you understand why?

Well, without a good reason why the exhaust mods won't help a quarter mile, I am still interested in the results.

if i have crabz can I still catch an STI?
seriously tho, bad example.
I want to know what Ian was trying to get at?
esplain the maffs to me
the car has more steam in 3rd gear than in 1st gear.
I understand that 1st is a taller gear and has the mechanical advantage, but doesnt explain why we pick up more speed at the top of 3rd

I honestly think its in the ECM... the car is designed to be smooooove not aggressive.
Try beating on it from a dig, with or without the traction control the car will not launch.
And like I said if it does launch, like from a 2500 on the brake launch, it hesitates.

Perhaps my question wasn't clear. If you add power, why won't it help?

The RL sucks at getting off the line. Opening up the exhaust won't help.
The RL is SLOW under 3500 RPM. Opening up the exhaust won't help.
The RL spends 20% of the 1/4 time from the start line to 60'. Opening up the exhaust won't help.
Got it.
The RL climbs like a champ after 3500 RPM and especially after 4900 RPM. Opening up the exhaust WILL help.
If you are WOT, your RPMs will only ever be under 4000 RPM once--in first gear off of the line. SO, again, why won't opening up the exhaust help between 60' and a 1/4 mile where 80% of the time is spent?

opening the exhaust is only as good as the amount of air and fuel going in.... ANNNNND no matter how much you cram in, the ECU will only put so much to the wheels in each gear at each RPM.

So the ECU limits power, and no matter what mods you make, the car will never improve. Makes sense.
I can't tell if this is the twilight zone or if I am David after the fucking dentist.

Didnt someone mention spray... hmmm who was that...
There have been stand alone units since before motec and hondata were cool on fast and furious.
Get your chit together if you are going to hang with the cool kids.

So in a few weeks, ill be getting some new brakes and brake lines. I'll also be adding a lightweight crankshaft pulley. I'm also going to see how much weight I can drop from my car including not having a lot of gas in my car because if you do the math each gallon of gas in your car is 8lbs and a 16/17 gallon tank is roughly 140 lbs of extra weight in your car or 70 if at a half tank. I'm also going to get my air filter changed because it is a bit dirty now. So ill be doing a bunch of little things differently to see how much of a difference it makes. Even before removing the spare tire improved me .2 seconds on my quarter mile. As far as the vtec goes, the real gain isn't until stage 3 which seems to be around 4000rpm. Not sure if an ecu tune can improve the low end or not, but according to my results im taking off the line faster than quite a few cars but my top end is suffering and I'm falling behind fast as if the car can't breath or something. I'll find out come this Friday or next.

I have a 05 I am doing PCD,j pipe , high flow cat , larger mid pipe and no res. 3.5" intake with velocity stack,p2r intake manifold isolater, xlr8 crank pulley and possibly a bored throtle body.
I'm thinking the rl ecu limits throtle % to limit power. I've checked timing and it seems to be fine in lower end .

I wonder if part of the power being reduced is to 'save' the SH-AWD system from damage?
It's not exactly designed for a lot of torque.

Well I got my XLR8 Aluminum Stock Diameter pulley installed today. I'm enjoying the gains that I got out of it, and it revs pretty damn quick compared to before. I'll be getting a CAI installed as well but I need to find the right one. But I'll be posting my best time this Friday so keeps your eyes out for that. I think this will be a good test to see how each part improves on the RL.

Take some vids
I believe the 04-08 TL aem fits ! Someone currect me if I am
Wrong !
I am doing a 3.5" CAI with velocity stack and the IAT sensor in the intake track.

Pretty sure it's the TL-S version that you need since it's (essentially) the same engine.
