Sacramento to San Diego and back today. Stopped in Pomona to look at some car parts, Riverside at WebCam Camshafts and San Diego. 1135 miles at normal traffic speeds on I-5 averaged 26.7 mpg using 91 octane.

think it's time to invest in a camera so you can show us your adventures. Also, please post the average speed from in car.

Thanks 007spy. All this mpg stuff is really important this side of the pond. I've just got my calculator out and this week we pay $7.78 per US gallon for 94 octane, the lowest octane we get.

Smile mpg

Yesterday on my commute home, the TL acheived 35.6 mpg highway .....
I don't expect those numbers everyday though, but it's nice to see.

When someone looks at manufacturer's MPG numbers... Do you expect to see a real number that you would see in everyday commutes or record numbers that someone can achieve cruising on expressway without stops?

@tnobori1 - I'm sure when you drove .1 your car showed "--" and if you would wait... it would show 0MPG

Thanks Alex but it was a joke. Any positive number divided by zero yields infinity. It was a response to the "negative mpg" remark. Legendliving, HOLY CRAP! I'll stop whining about $4.30 a gallon now!

That seems more like it. Do you think you had a math error in your previous trip. I just can't imaging getting 38 ave mpg at any speed in my RL

I went over it again - assuming it was overfilled by a gallon before we left and underfilled by a gallon when we returned the mileage would be 40.5 mpg / 28.1 mpg. I keep a mileage spreadsheet of every gasoline purchase for the last 7 or 8 years. The car is in the shop today for an A1 oil etc. I noticed coming home last night that the torque convertor on mine won't unlock at freeway speed unless one really hammers it. It may be that on the trip back from Monterey or one like it where it is sustained at 65/70 MPH that the gearing and octane give it greater mpg. I asked the dealer today to check the TC on the freeway to see if it is normal but I suspect they will say yes it acts that way by design - there is no noise or growl like some folks are reporting when the TC goes bad.

I won't say how fast I did the San Diego roundtrip but it was fast enough to be in a hurry and slow enough to avoid driving unsafely. I did notice an uncountable number of people driving fast while their heads were buried in the cockpit texting. Stupid.

Re the question someone asked about how EPA calculates - that all changed about 5 years ago to what an average driver would see. It used to be lab numbers but now it is done more fairly to what you should get if you drive carefully. There are cases out there of hypermilers getting 60+ mpg in Honda Accords etc but EPA doesn't use that type driving (nor do I for safety reasons.)

Holy crap! I don't even pay 1/2 that for 93 octane and couldn't if I wanted to!

Hey guys I'm new here, I recently got a 08 RL and after 2 tanks of gas, I noticed I've been getting very bad mpg. I know the car is rated 16/24 but after 2 tanks, my combined mpg is actually 12. Even though I drive mostly city, I think there might be something wrong for me to be getting this low. I don't have a heavy foot and I just leave it in "D" when I commute. Any suggestions on why this is happening?

depends what city you're in. If it is New York City, that's perfectly normal.

with that much stop and go you need something with regenerative braking.
