Installing Wood Shift Knob on a 2006 RL

How tricky is this? I had the Dealer install the wood wheel. Can I do this myself?

Thanks in advance!

I believe it's a simple "screw off old, screw on new".

Yes it is very basic you can do it on your own. The wood knob is a nice addition.

Post some Pix if you do it!

I'd like to see how the wood knob with it's chrome base looks in the car. I'm tempted by the wood knob, but that chrome base doesn't seem like a good match inside. Is there any way to get a matte finish look to the chrome?

There is a closed thread with a bunch of Acura installation instructions in it. I believe most are for TL but it should be the same. Instructions for the shift knob are in the thread.

It simply twists off and twists on... I've taken mine on and off a couple times while working on finding a 'squeek' around the silver shift plate. (Which I think I finally killed with some felt-tape and silicone lube). Anyway.. you can definitely install it yourself.

CL6 - I'll try to remember to take a pic for you so you can see it. I think it adds a lot to the 'looks' of the interior.

I've been tempted by this mod on the thought that the wood knob would go nicely with the dash and set an even more elegant environment.

How does it look with the chrome base instead of the leather knob's brushed metal? Does the Acura logo line up and look good?

I like the extra bling with the chrome. The knob also feels better to me than the leather one. No stitches to rub against your palm.

This is the saddest excuse for a thread ever. Twist off, twist on. Can this be any easier?

How about some pictures of the installed knob?

Touge, here ya go. The flash screws with the colors a bit. It is a better match in person.

Does anyone have photos of the knob in a taupe interior? Perhaps a "long" shot, rather than a close-up.

It's soooo darn tempting..... I may have to go to the Acura dealer and ask to hold one. And take it out to the car and see how it would look inside.

RL pdf installation

I though about getting this knob. I have the taupe interior.
I felt the chrome clashes with the taupe too much, so I didn't get it.
I think it looks much better with the ebony. Just my feeling.
Also, I found an RL pdf on how to install the knob, for all those worried.
Its for the 2005 RL, but its the same part number for the 2006 and 2007 RL.

LOOKS & FEELS GREAT!

Everyone is right. Very simple installation. This is absolutely necessary if you upgrade the steering wheel. I am so glad I did this. Thanks for everyone’s input.

Damn you guys, just making me spend more money on my car

Got the wood steering wheel and shifter. I got the wheel from Acura of Troy (via eBay) and had it installed yesterday. The knob was just received now from Acura of Cleveland, so changing it as soon as I leave the office. The steering wheel feels great. My shifter looks a lot darker than the ones in the pictures above, though.

I'd be interested to hear your impressions of driving with the new wheel. It is a tempting mod, along with the knob.

I'm not too crazy about the textured leather look on the wood wheel, but I could see it growing on me. I've driven a relative's RX300 with a wood wheel, and found it a little bit weird - kind of hard on the hands but kind of interesting in a tactile sort of way.

Still, it seems like it could really dress up the interior, especially in combination with a wood shift knob. But that's a nearly $600+ combination!

IMO, the wood wheel is 100x nicer than the stock leather unit because of one thing. It has the cutouts for your thumbs!

The "textured" leather on the steerting wheel actually matches the center panels of the leather seats. I think it would grow on you quickly. IMO, the wood steering wheel should be the standard along with wood shift knob.

Well, you can get it for a little less if you go through the proper channels. I got both items from eBay, from Acura dealers:

Wheel $357.50 shipped
Knob $93.90 shipped
Wheel installation (Ball Acura) $93.50 (Kearny Mesa Acura quoted $190 for the exact same job)

I am really enjoying the new look of my car!

The complaints about how it feels is funny, considering you barely touch it since the car is auto. heh. With that said, I'll be getting one too.

Just installed mine today, wasn't a hard install at all. I noticed immediately the new wheel is thicker and the thumb grips are nice to have. It does feel a bit odd at first going from leather to the wood, but I think you get used to it quick. Definitely makes the interior feel more more expensive and luxurious. I agree that this wheel and the knob should have been standard. I'll throw up a picture tomorrow in the photogallery section.
