Fuel Economy

Hey guys, I was wondering if you could give me some advice on an issue I am having.

I used to have a 05 White RL which gave me about 635Km's per tank, and now I have a 05 Blue RL but I only get about 550Km's per tank.

oil changes are done at the same intervals, air filter is clean, tires have the right amount of air in them, not sure what else I need to look at to see why I have such a big difference in how many Km's I get per full tank.

Any suggestions on what I should look into?

Thanks,

Your post indicates the only difference between the 2 vehicles is the color, which obviously has no bearing on fuel efficiency.

Aside from the air filter, tire pressure etc, driving habits can make a big difference in fuel economy. Below, is a good article from the Edmunds site you may find interesting

when you say per tank do you mean from start until the light comes on or do you go past the light to when there is basically no gas? What kind of driving do you do as in what % would you say is city/highway?

FWIW my 05 RL is like your blue guy and I do a mix of highway/city, mainly highway. Funny since mine is blue too. Maybe they made it suck with fuel because the colour is nice.

BY the time my fuel light comes on I MIGHT hit 550km. If I went to empty (my experience says the light comes on with around 10 litres left) I'd possibly approach 600km or maybe more but I don't know.

The display says I avg about 10.5-11 litres/100km most of the time on a tank and when I fill up and hit the highway I can be at 8L/100km or less after the trip. What does yours say before you refuel?

Maybe you have a seized brake caliper (or two) and the brakes are rubbing? Is there a noticeable performance difference between the two cars?

Or, perhaps the fuel gauge is off and you're not as empty as you think on the blue car. Is the the KPG on the MID the same for both?

Also validate you have the same AVG MPH when comparing the two. I find the corrolation between AVG MPH and AVG MPG better assessment of your drivng habits than a guesstimate of %city %hwy mileage.

My RL is blue, and I seem to get better than average mileage.

With 60% city & 40% hwy I average 20MPG (AVG MPH 22)

With 50% city & 50% hwy I average 21.5MPG (AVG MPH 24)

With 40% city & 60% hwy I average 24MPG (AVG MPH 26)

My current tank has mostly highway miles with 26.5MPG and AVG 37 MPH

That is with 93 octane with A/C on. Summer grade fuel actually produces better economy with A/C on than winter grade fuel with the A/C off. Winter numbers are usually down 1-2 MPG on average.
