Extended Warranty Question

I posted my question in the MDX forum, but they get so little traffic, I wanted to see what you RL guys think...

My other car is a 2007 MDX tech. IT has about 49k on the odometer and I was curious what an extended warranty woudl cost. I called a few local dealers and the three quotes were similar.. the cheapest one was:

4 yrs / 48k miles / zero deductible = $2300.

that's like $575/year for the extension of my factory warranty for the next 4 uyears. We bought the car in the beginning of 07 - so we put about 50k on it in 3.5 years. We are dirving it slightly less now that I bought the RL and we can use that for family trips too..so I woudl expect to get a full 4 years of coverage and get close too or near the max mileage by the end of the term.

you guys think this is a fair deal / for the peace of mine and likely repair costs on a vehicle lke an MDX or you think it's a big rip and I'd be better off to just bank that $575/year and see what happens...

my vote is to bank it! i doubt if you'll have $2300 in repairs over the next four years. not to mention, if anything does go wrong it probably won't be covered under the extended warranty anyway! also, you should ask yourself if you really plan on keeping it another 48 months.

as to whether stuff is covered - the acura care warranty is what I looked into - which is an extension of the factory warranty...so if it's covered under the bumper to bumper factory warranty - it's covered under the extended acura care warranty...

i will likely keep it the next four years...but I have to admit - you neverknow for sure - selling it could happen, although I doubt it.

my main concern is that I'd spend 2300 on the warranty, and wind up with half that in cliaims and feel like I wasted the rest...

i'd have to have some serious repairs to get up to 2300 in 4 years...

absent a motor failure, total AWD failure, transmission failure, or some other major system - i don't see it necessarily paying off.

the typial stuff that I know i'd have to replace, like brakes,, pads, rotors, shocks, etc - all those items are "wear" items and not covered under teh warranty...

For me, i think that if you could find a better deal, then you should go for it. You never know what will happen tomorrow. For me, i bought extended waranty for both two of my RL ( 99 and 05) and also my 08 Odyssey. To tell you the truth, last month, the automatic door on my odyssey broke down and have to be replaced. Without the warranty it would cost us almost 1500$ to fix, however it is included in the warranty so we did not have to pay a dime for it.

If you decide to get an extended warranty I highly suggest sticking with the Acura brand. Afternarket warranties can be a real headache to deal with when making a claim, that is, if they dont' bankrupt (i.e. WarrantyGold).

Have you tried internet Acura dealers such as Curry Acura, or from one of our sponsors, Hansel? Some time ago, Acura halted internet warranty sales, but I understand that you can still buy them over the telephone, because this is a telephone transaction, and not an internet transaction. I had bought mine some years ago from Tim Polniak at Ray Laks Acura. Tim has moved to another dealer, Acura of Peoria. Maybe someone knows more, like one of the moderators.

I know that when I called three of the five Acura dealers in this area, there telephone prices were very high, and then I started searching on the internet and got what I consider a great deal for an Acura Care warranty, but that was when the car had less than 6K miles on it.

That's a lot of money.

I bought an AcuraCare extended warranty when I bought my RL back in 2006. I purchased the 7yr/100K warranty for a little over $1000. I was less concerned about the duration as I was the miles. I knew I would hit 100K miles before 7 years. As it stands I've had my car now a little over four years and I have 69K miles on her.

It's always a gamble, but in hindsight I'm glad I purchased the warranty. The door handles (specifically the touch to lock/unlock feature) on the '05/'06 RLs has proven to be problematic. Each door handle has been replaced at least three times, the latest occurred while I was past the extended warranty and was covered by the AcuraCare warranty.

With the door handles costing ~$400 each, excluding labor, I'm sure I'll at least recoup my investment.

The only thing different about the AcuraCare warranty is that when writing the service order the service manager tells you that there is a $XX diagnostic fee. If there is a problem that requires a repair, the diagnostic fee is waived.

With my door handle they never charged me as the electronics in the handle failed, but I did have an instance where the "Check Gas Cap" message appeared in the MID all of a sudden (I hadn't recently refueled the car and actually only had a 1/4 tank). After the message wouldn't go away after two days I took it in. They initially quoted me $64 for the diagnostice fee. They came back and said they checked the cap and the fuel system and nothing turned up. They cleared the code and out of "goodwill" only charged me half ($32).

I put a call into Curry Acura in NY and got the best quote so far.

$1965 for the ZERO deductible plan. That's $350 less than the best offer I rec'd via phone here in CA. I still have to pay sales tax even though it's out of state..but it's sligthly less than CA sales tax...

i might bite on this..what do you all think?

I don't think that's a bad deal. I purchased an extended warranty for my 2009 TL SH/AWD for 7 years or 120K miles for roughly $1,700. When you consider that the ballast on one of the HID lights costs over $700.00 w/o labor, things can really add up quickly. In my opinion, it's piece of mind that you're paying for in advance. Given the complexity and electronics on these vehicles, I think it is a sound investment. Good luck.

Peace of mind - won't take long to eat that $2K in repairs. I paid $1800 for my 7/120/$0 when I bught my RL new in 2006. In recently had my rack system replaced on my '08 under warranty - part alone would have been $1100 plus another $350 for labor.

Bought AcuraCare warranties for both my '04 MDX and '06 RL. Haven't used the RL warranty yet but had the torque converter on the MDX replaced free under the AcuraCare waranty. If the savings didn't pay for the warranty, it came close. Considering the cost to repair just about anything on a newer car these days, I wouldn't want to be without coverage. I also don't think I'd ever consider an aftermarket warranty company...just OEM. Heard too many horror stories about the others.

thanks for the input. my car has 49k on it...and the goal is to keep it at least 100k...and see how it's running... I haven't paid it off yet, and it would stink to be stiillmaking car payments and get nailed with big repairs...

it runs great now..but my guess is that even if nothing huge ever does happen, i'm sure to have a handful of small/medium things go wrong - and lets just say those items are $1000... which I would have paid anyway.. assume I never have anymore claims..and they "win" by $1000.. I essentially paid $250/year for peace of mind in case the car imploded... that's like $20/month.. that's not bad when you break the cost down over the 48 months...

$2000 in a fair chunk of money to lay out at once..but you have to remember that the car is going to have something go wrong.... and some of it will be "warranty" items...
