Dumb driveshaft question: Does it ever disable the car, or does it just whine?

Dumb driveshaft question: Does it ever disable the car, or does it just whine?

I've never been clear on this. Thanks to all wiser hands who fill me in on the facts.

What's the worst-case scenario?

Are you concerned because yours is whining? I doubt it would disable the car.

To my knowledge, it's only the annoying whine. I've never read of the bearing seizing up and disabling the car.

Actually, no. I asked because a friend was contemplating an RL but had heard about the whine issue, and I didn't know what was the accurate advice to give him.
